Why AI and Viztech hold the key to a safer internet

Online media companies are chasing their tails when it comes to policing terrorist material, and other dangerous and offensive content. But there is artificial intelligence-based technology out there that can spot it before it goes live, says David Fulton, CEO of WeSee.

Leading figures in both government and academia have been focused on a common cause in recent months – how best to solve the growing problem of online terrorist content. However, the jury’s out on whether the big digital media players, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, are up to the job, despite being under growing pressure from pending legislation. The good news it looks like a powerful new image-recognition technology based on deep learning and neural networks could provide a solution.

In the same week in June that German lawmakers passed a bill forcing major internet companies to banish “evidently illegal” content within 24 hours or face fines up to $57 million, a conference took place in Harvard University entitled: Harmful Speech Online: At the Intersection of Algorithms and Human Behaviour. It discussed how best to constrain harmful online content, and was co-hosted by the Harvard-based Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a London-based think tank.

The opening address stated that extremism in online spaces can have an enormous impact on public opinion, inclusiveness and politics. It also cited the enormous gap  –  in terms of resourcing, activism, and even basic research  –  between the problems of harmful speech online and the available solutions to control it.

Automated Detection

Just a few weeks later in September, the heads of state of the UK, France and Italy met with internet companies at the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss the issue. In a speech ahead of the meeting, UK Prime Minister Theresa May threatened the internet giants with huge fines if they could not come up with a way to detect and remove terrorist content within two hours. This time span is significant as within two hours two-thirds of the propaganda is shared – so you could question whether two hours is actually too long.

In response, Google and YouTube have announced they are increasing their use of technology to help automatically identify videos. Meanwhile the problem continues and is only going to get worse. A recent article in the Telegraph revealed that, according to official figures, 54,000 different websites containing advice on bomb making, and committing attacks using trucks and knives, were posted online by supporters of the so-called Islamic State group between August last year and May this year.

What’s more, Cisco has forecast that by 2020 there will be 65 trillion images and six trillion videos uploaded to the web, which will result in over 80% of all internet traffic being image or video-based in less than three years’ time. That’s a lot of content to monitor for extremist and other inappropriate material, but the latest advances in artificial intelligence (AI) could hold the key to unlocking this conundrum.

Emerging Field of Viztech

Pioneers in the new field of Viztech have developed a highly effective adult and violence video filter. It uses AI to identify terrorist and other harmful digital content automatically – and not within two hours of being published, but before it actually goes live. It can spot inappropriate digital content, such as an ISIS flag or face of a known hate-preacher. Viztech can also detect and categorize video, as well as still images, quickly and efficiently, processing information just like the human brain, but up to 1,000 times faster, so not just mimicking human behavior but performing far better.

Driven by deep learning and neural networks, it’s similar to the technology behind the iPhone X’s facial recognition system, but much more sophisticated. Rather than being reactionary, it’s predictive, filtering, identifying and categorising video content before it even appears online. In Viztech lies the solution to curbing online terrorist material and its unfortunate effects, which is something governments, academics and, of course, digital media businesses are all desperate to do. Ultimately it holds the key to a safer internet for everyone.

LG Q6 review

Introduction

LG went all-in with the 18:9 display aspect ratio this year for its flagships – both the G6 and the V30 employ this spec that’s become incredibly trendy in 2017. The tall screens have only recently started to make their way to mid-rangers, though, and on that front LG was among the first to deliver, with the Q6.

LG Q6 Review

Look at its front and you may easily mistake it for a G6, especially if you don’t have the higher-specced model around for a size comparison. The Q6 is slightly smaller, but keeps the same overall bezel-starved design around a 5.5″ LCD screen that has rounded corners.

The similarities aren’t as striking on the back, however, because the Q6 being cheaper means the glass used on its bigger and more potent sibling has been swapped for plastic. The metal frame is still present, and feels reassuringly good when you hold the phone.

LG Q6 ReviewLG Q6 next to the G6

The Q6 is a device that aims to impress with its modern screen, but ultimately has been built to accommodate a specific price point. Hence, compromises do exist in many areas. It’s the phone you buy if you’re smitten with the G6’s looks but don’t want to shell out as much cash.

LG Q6 key features

  • Body: aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass 3 front, plastic back; MIL-STD-810G certified for being able to handle temperature extremes, rain, humidity, sand, and dust
  • Display: 5.5″ IPS LCD, 2,160 x 1,080 resolution, 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio, 442ppi
  • Rear camera: 13 MP, f/2.2 aperture, 1/3″ sensor size, 1.12µm pixel size, 1080p@30fps video recording
  • Front camera: 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture, 1/5″ sensor size, 1.12µm pixel size, 100-degree field-of-view
  • OS: Android 7.1.1 Nougat
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 435; octa-core CPU (1.4 GHz Cortex-A53), Adreno 505 GPU
  • Memory: 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (Q6a), 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (Q6), 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (Q6+); dedicated microSD slot for cards up to 256GB
  • Battery: 3,000 mAh Li-Po (sealed)
  • Connectivity: Single or Dual-SIM; LTE-A, 2-band carrier aggregation, Cat.7 (300/100Mbps); microUSB; Wi-Fi b/g/n; GPS; Bluetooth 4.2; FM radio
  • Misc: single rear-facing speaker; 3.5mm headset jack on the bottom

Main shortcomings

  • No fingerprint scanner
  • No fast or wireless charging
  • Single rear-facing speaker
  • No USB Type-C port
  • No 5GHz Wi-Fi
  • Rather confusing naming situation, with the Q6, Q6+, and Q6a basically being the same device only with varying amounts of RAM and storage

As with any non-flagship product, what’s most important is whether LG managed to nicely balance the spec sheet here enough that the Q6 will be adequate for most users. You obviously shouldn’t expect top of the line performance in any area, but some omissions such as the fingerprint sensor are quite baffling, especially considering that most of this phone’s competitors happily sport the biometric authentication method even at lower price points.

LG Q6 Review

The Q6 thus seems to be a mixed bag from the get-go, but let’s not jump to any conclusions just yet. Join us on the following pages as we take a deep dive into what makes this handset stand out from the crowd of similarly priced devices. As always, we’ll start with a tour of the hardware.

Currently, she is holidaying in Vienna, Austria as evidenced by her Instagram post. A few days back she was snapped at the airport heading to an undisclosed location. Ranveer Singh was also spotted at Colombo International Airport and it is being said that the lovebirds are going to have a secret vacation in Sri Lanka or the Maldives.

It is not clear yet where the duo will meet. He could be in Colombo as Sri Lanka is a stopover for most flights from Mumbai to the Maldives, or he could be there because Sri Lanka is the final destination. We would know only if they upload anything on their social media handles. Let us wait for their beautiful pics!

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in for review

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 phones, announced at the beginning of December, are among the first in the company portfolio to have 18:9 ratio screens (along with the flagship Mi Mix 2). Xiaomi fans commented after the launch that they will hold back purchases until the Redmi Note 5 arrives, but surprisingly it is already in for review with a different name – Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in for review

When preparing for the successor of the Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi went with the saying “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” motto. The Redmi 5 Plus has similar looking specs – a power-efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset inside, the same as the Redmi Note 4. The overall design is also very similar with one main difference – a tall screen with 18:9 ratio with more room for browsing and videos.

When shooting pictures in 18:9 mode, one-third of the height is cropped. Any camera-loving smartphone user would stick to the standard 4:3 ratio over the trendy one since the quality stays the same, but you get a bigger picture with more pixels.

Another feature that might be annoying for some is the micro-USB port and the measly 10W charger included in the box. It’s high time all phone makers move to a single port standard and if USB-C is universally better, while hold off the transition for yet another year.

PIP Mode is easily moved • Lack of trio soft keys gives more room to web pages

While pinch-to-fullscreen feature in the YouTube app might not be available on the Redmi 5 Plus, we have to point out the picture-in-picture mode works perfectly fine, provided you are playing the clip with the native browser.

Videos are running on a different player, not the default one. That way you get swipe controls for brightness and volume and a convenient button for the picture to pop out for the PIP mode.

The MIUI 9 Settings can hide the trio of soft buttons. This is when the full power of 18:9 screen is unleashed, and you have more screen for reading. The keys are easily reachable with a single swipe up from the lowest part of the display.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 • Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

The Redmi 5 Plus costs between $150 and $195 in China and will sport a similar price tag around the world. Being so affordable and sticking to the basic specs, the phone is poised to become a hit. But will it live up to the expectations we have for a successor to the globally available Redmi Note 4? Stay around to find out in our full review.

Twitter ended the year on a fascinating run

It’s been pretty easy to point at Twitter and, with each quarterly moment when it discloses its financial guts, let out a long exasperated sigh.

Twitter since going public at a now in retrospect astounding valuation has for much of its public life been quite the disappointment to Wall Street. But then something interesting happened in the back half of 2017: it went on a rather spectacular run, and though ending on a bit of a slump, it looks like it could finish the year up more than 25 percent — which, by Twitter terms, is pretty good.

Much of that is thanks to a (finally) good report in October this year and a blessing from a Wall Street firm, but we could potentially chalk up getting to those events to some actual things Twitter has done. The product updates haven’t been absolutely transformative (like the earth-shattering bump to a 280-character limit per tweet), but since the introduction of the algorithmic timeline last year, it would seem that Twitter is getting slightly less allergic to changes to its core product — even if it alienates part of its very loud user base.

Twitter has also seemingly begun taking more action when it comes to enforcing new rules around harassment and abuse, a problem that has been hounding the company for years and is even more visible this year. Earlier this month it said it would begin enforcing new rules around how it handles hateful conduct and abusive behavior. Twitter’s strategy here has been often opaque, and while it’ll take a while to reach some kind of middle ground, it’s actually doing stuff.

And doing stuff, it seems, is currently enough for Twitter to figure out how to get a nice up-and-to-the-right-ish chart like this one:

While these stocks — especially volatile ones — will swing often, sometimes the general idea is to try to gauge the future potential of the company. For Twitter, that means it’s going to have to figure out a way to re-ignite growth and get users coming back and using the platform. It has some very deep core issues, and sometimes seems to flip-flop on its own actions and have troubles communicating. But if Twitter is somehow able to right this ship, it may have an opportunity to get that growth engine moving again.

Most executives will probably give the boilerplate “we are committed to delivering long-term value for shareholders” argument for stock swings in the near term, but those swings are really significant for the company. It’s the closest thing to a near-term public barometer for the company’s success, which means it does a lot for employee morale. And it also can be significant for attracting talent, as the company may need to offer more generous compensation packages to rip people away from companies that are high-growth or well-established.

Twitter, going forward, it appears, needs to keep doing stuff. It’s made a lot of moves in the video space in addition to building business tools — like a video-centric ad format. And it certainly has done that to some extent, trying to extend its pitch as a real-time communications platform to video. It needs to continue cracking down on harassment and abuse if it’s going to attract new, more casual users. It needs to keep making tweaks to its products even under the risk of alienating some of its users to make it more user-friendly. In short, there’s a lot of stuff to be done.

What’s arguably the richest part of this whole story, however, is that Twitter now has roughly the same market cap as Snap following its back-of-the-year run. Hovering at around $18 billion, it’s the tale of two runs here: Twitter found some way to turn its story around, and Snap is still having some pretty dramatic issues telling its story to Wall Street. Both have the specter of user growth over them, but somehow Twitter has been able to at least throw a rock in the opposite direction to get the attention of investors temporarily.

Will Twitter get its wish of finally escaping the MAU? Probably not. But for now, it looks like Dorsey and the rest of them have figured out at least some small way to sell the promise of Twitter to Wall Street and get them on board for the time being.

The 2017 phone trends as we saw them

What’s in vogue, what’s fallen out of fashion? It’s that time of year when we look back at phone trends over the last 12 months and space permitting we may even make a few predictions for next year.

So, using our extensive phone database and test results, let’s power up our machine learning algorithms and feed it the 50 most popular phones based on your browsing and search patterns here at GSMArena.

These 50 phones will represent our definition of ‘the market’ and as we’re not splitting them down by flagship, mid range or entry level we can average them out to give you the hard facts to those trends you probably already know about.

Size

This year our phones got thinner, in 2017 the average thickness of our phones reduced by 0.22mm to 7.73mm.

Of course, the most visual trend for 2017 was the stigmatization of the bezel. The space freed up by the ‘chin’ and the ‘forehead’ allows for a taller display and hence the move to displays with taller aspect ratios including 18:9 and 19.5:9. As a result, the average height increased by 3.65mm to 151.36mm with a slight increase in width up .88mm to 73.88mm.

So how about that display

In 2017 the average display was 5.57″ up from 5.28″ in 2016 with a jump in pixel density to 394.90 ppi.

This is the point were you may be thinking ‘what – these are such small numbers’. The great thing about averages is that if just one phone had a big display it would hardly register – one phone doesn’t make a trend.

Weight & Construction

So whilst our phones are getting thinner and taller surely they weigh roughly the same? No, in 2017 our phones got heavier with an average weight of 161g, an increase of 12g from last year. There could be a number of factors at play here but we also saw a 14% reduction in the use of plastic in our phone cases to be replaced with aluminium, metal or ceramic.

Our phones are getting heavier
Metal, glass and ceramic construction could be making our phones heavier

Our phones are getting heavier • Metal, glass and ceramic construction could be making our phones heavier

Whilst we’re on the subject of phone construction, the number of phones that gained the more useful IP68 Ingress protection rating increased by 10%.

Casualties of the banishment of bezels

We’ve spent many column inches discussing this but the major casualty of the banishment of bezels is the front mounted finger print sensor. This year, they’re in the minority with 42% of phones having a front mounted fingerprint sensor.

Next year we’ve been promised through the glass finger print sensors, with Vivo being named as the first manufacture to deliver this. If the technology is ready for prime time and performs reliably and quickly this could be a game changer which sees this trend start to reverse.

3.5mm Audio Jack & Stereo Speakers

Another area of intense debate is the removal of the humble 3.5mm audio jack and its decline is continuing with a 12% increase in the number of phones now without a headphone jack. On a more positive note, we saw a 4% increase in the number of phones now with Stereo speakers for those of you who want better sound quality from your phone.

The 3.5mm jack on its way to extinction
Our phones are sound better every year

The 3.5mm jack on its way to extinction • Our phones are sound better every year

Let’s talk batteries

Thinner phones = smaller capacity batteries, right?

Wrong – actually average battery capacity increased slightly to 3292mAh. Good news, well not quite – battery endurance dropped quite significantly from 60.5 hrs to 54.3 hrs. This result was a surprise to us and one trend we don’t want to see continuing.

The good news is that its even easier and faster to charge our phones with wireless charging now in 16% of phones and 58% of phones supporting Fast charging.

Battery Capacity up but with a drop in endurance

Lights, cameras and action

Like us you probably noticed that the megapixel war ended a couple of years back with the focus being on the quality, so it came as no surprise to see the number of megapixels in the primary camera stay about the same.

We’re living in the age of the selfie though so as again it didn’t come as a surprise to see the number of megapixels increase substantially in our front facing cameras.

The number of phones with Dual Lens primary cameras saw a significant increase this year with 34% of phones now using them even though they may have different implementations.

We saw less dramatic increases, but increases non the less in the number of phones packing Optical Image Stabilization and 4K video recording.

OIS equipped cameras increases
As did 4K video recording capabilities

OIS equipped cameras increases • As did 4K video recording capabilities

Let’s get technical

This shouldn’t be an area that carries any surprises but it’s interesting to see the raw figures and still the significant step changes our phones are taking.

In both our CPU and GPU tests we saw excellent gains along with a massive increase in LTE performance.

More storage and RAM are always good to have and we saw a good jump in both.

CPU & GPU saw significant gains
As did LTE speeds
More Storage and RAM - what's not to like

CPU & GPU saw significant gains • As did LTE speeds • More Storage and RAM – what’s not to like

Price

The flagship phones seemingly made all the waves by their prices setting new highs but behind the scenes everybody followed, albeit less slowly. The result, the average price rose to 408Euro, up from 314Euro.

It wasn’t just flagship phones that increased in price

Wrapping Up

So another year is over and we’re already looking forward to next years releases and the subsequent rumors that proceed them.

Whilst the majority of the trends we already knew it was good to see them backed up by tangible numbers. As consumers we’ve never had it better, ok we have to pay for it sometimes but it’s good to see our phones getting bigger and better displays, more storage and that just keep getting faster.

It would be good to see some of these trends reversed, I’m looking at you – battery endurance, and that no new ones are introduced – looking at you here Apple, I don’t think it will be long though before Apple remove the volume up and down buttons!
