Kodak wants to show smartphone owners it can make one as well, with a solid camera. This week, it revealed the Kodak Ektra, which does have a decent, though not overwhelming, 21 megapixel rear camera, along with an 13 megapixel front-facing camera.

The rear camera supports 4K video and HDR, along with optical image stabilisation. It has an f/2.0 lens, while the 13 megapixel front-facing camera has an f/2.2 lens. The Kodak Ektra also has its own custom image app, which allows users to switch quickly to a number of different modes, including portrait, manual, sports, bokeh, night, and more.

The smartphone hardware portion of the Kodak Ektra includes a 5-inch 1080p display, a Mediatek Helio X-20 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The design of the phone has one of those faux leather looks, along with a grip for better use when in photo or video taking mode.

The Kodak Ektra is not slated for a launch until December, and it will make its debut first in the UK for the no-contract price of £450 (about $551). We would imagine that Kodak is banking on its well-known photography branding to help sell this phone, but it remains to be seen if this marketing will work when there are so many good smartphones that have just as good, if not likely better, cameras.
