Adobe sees VR and wearables as next great travel disruptors

A recent report from Adobe Digital Insights claims that augmented and virtual reality, along with wearable technology, will be the newest travel industry disruptors.

Mentions of wearable gadgets for traveling went up by 44% after the Ocean Medallion was introduced by Princess Cruises back in January.  The Ocean Medallion is a small device that can be worn in various ways to serve as a passenger’s digital identity.  It appears that consumers are eager to embrace the new wearable tech trend.

Sales of VR devices were up big time during the 2016 holiday season, capturing consumers’ imaginations and driving new ideas for how VR can be used for businesses too. For example, the hotel industry has also begun taking an interest in this new trend: Eight major chains have been experimenting with offering virtual reality experiences to guests during the past six months.

Car rental industry sees the downside

However, technology presents a downside for some parts of the industry. Car rentals made online have decreased by 14% during the first quarter, partly due to the success of Uber. Online reservations have decreased by 2% with each 10% increase in social media mentions. Last year, between March and December, Uber comments grew to 6 million, while car rental reservations were reduced by 28%.

Other traveling trends have affected the car rental industry too. International travel to the US was reduced by 6% during the first quarter, diminishing the need for automobiles. And as airfare increases, many families may decide it is more economical to drive their own cars, rather than fly. One-stop destinations, such as cruises and inclusive resorts, have also have lessened the need for rental cars.

Travel is a prevalent topic on social media, receiving about 14 million mentions every month, on average.

10 Beautiful Passing Time Photos (Taken With A Smartphone)

The theme of this week’s showcase of mobile photography is passing time. This theme can encompass things such as passing the time of day, observing people as they go about their daily business or people deep in thought. For example, Rob Pearson-Wright’s shot of a Tokyo commuter deep in thought, or Duncan Powell’s shot of a silhouetted cyclist passing by to Ervin Vice’s seascape image as two people hang out by the sea. All photos this week in some way convey the idea that photography can be used to capture these special moments as life passes us all by.

Featured photographers this week include: Alex Graham, Rob Pearson-Wright, Dina Alfasi, Duncan R Powell, Tanukallio, Ervin Vice, mafmalafaya, johnny777, Marconspace and mgyoungphotography

Wester Hailes Edinburgh

Wester Hailes Edinburgh‘ by Alex Graham – “I pass these buildings fairly regularly and have taken more than a few photos in the past but somehow the light and shadows never seemed to match up. I like the shapes and angles of the buildings and roofs and how they seem to balance. It’s all down to personal taste I suppose but I like it.

Surprisingly few people pass this spot and when they do they do it pretty quickly. I hung about for 25 minutes or so, missed the first passerby but caught the next courtesy of the iphones ‘keep-your-finger-on-the-button-and-you-might-be-lucky-option’.

I wanted to get the figure smack in the middle of the posts and as near as possible to the center of the photo. It was always going to be a 1-1 photograph and it was always going to be black and white. As a rule I tend to use Snapseed and Lightroom Mobile but on this occasion I used Mextures initially then Lightroom to slightly up the blacks and adjust the shadows and finish with a smidgen of clarity.”

Silently he waits, dreaming the same dream

Silently he waits, dreaming the same dream‘ by Rob Pearson-Wright – “Traveling on Tokyo’s subways on a recent trip to Japan, I noted something in common with commuters worldwide. Some people just try and pass their time on their trips, in their own little space, as the world outside rattles by. The man in the image seemed to exemplify this. Just alone with his thoughts as the city passed by, dreaming his dreams. I had a shot of the man on his own but I liked this one, with someone entering the frame, more as it added a sense of movement around him which compounded his isolationism.

On this trip I was taking hundreds of shots a day and needed a quick workflow for editing. I processed the photo in Snapseed using the Tune Image option to tweak the brightness, up the contrast slightly and lower the highlights a touch. To finish off I converted the image to black and white to concentrate focus on the man.”

As time goes by

As time goes by‘ by Dina Alfasi – “The photo is part of a series of photographs I take every day on my train/bus trip. This woman caught my attention. From her look, you can tell she has a special life story. The light reflected from the window created a special atmosphere. I edited with Snapseed and VSCO.”

Easy rider

Easy rider‘ by Duncan R Powell – “I take most of these shots on my walk to work in Cheltenham, UK. If the sun is out, particularly in spring and autumn, the light is great on the Promenade. So I wait by imperial gardens for people to pass by.

This shot was earlier this week on my iPhone 6s. I saw this girl on her bike coming. I had my camera app open so did a burst of shots. Then I edited it on Tadaa to highlight the silhouette and achieve the bokeh. “

Untitled

Untitled‘ by Tanukallio – “This is taken in Helsinki Metro. The man was traveling with a pizza. Taken with an iPhone 6s and us usual I was shooting and edited it with Hipstamatic.”

South Point, Hawaii

South Point, Hawaii‘ by Ervin Vice – “This shot was taken at South Point on the Big Island. It’s the southern most point in the United States. The land stops abruptly in a dramatic cliff. There are signs warning against diving or jumping off said cliff, citing the likelihood of serious or fatal injury. But take a wild guess as to whether that deters people. The guy in the lower left had just leaped into the water below and climbed back up on a rusty old ladder that wouldn’t pass safety codes in any nation on earth. But you only live once. “

Golfers left stunned by 3 metre gator

Just casually snapping a pic of the gator before taking his put.

PLAYING golf in Florida means dealing with more hazards than just the bunker and waterhole — sometimes, it’s what is lurking in that waterhole that is the real concern.

Golfer Bill Pruitt found that out this past weekend when his play was disrupted by a huge three metre-long alligator who casually sauntered onto the fairway.

Mr Pruitt posted a video of the animal on Facebook which has since gone viral. In it, the alligator can be seen stalking two sandhill cranes on the course near Orlando while golfers look on.

Judging by his Facebook page, Mr Pruitt seems to be pretty happy about the 15 minutes of fame the video has brought him.

Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times, he said preparing to chip his ball onto the green when his partner shouted: “Look at this.”

You can hear Pruitt exclaim “holy cow!” on the video but neither men seemed to be overly concerned by the creature’s presence.

But they were impressed by its size.

“It frightened me,” Pruitt admitted to the paper. “It was at least 10 feet. I’m 6-2, and he was twice the size of me.”

Facebook targets ‘insecure’ teens

Picture: Justin Sullivan

FACEBOOK has come under fire over revelations it is targeting potentially vulnerable youths who “need a confidence boost” to facilitate predatory advertising practices.

The allegation was revealed this morning by The Australian which obtained internal documents from the social media giant which reportedly show how Facebook can exploit the moods and insecurities of teenagers using the platform for the potential benefit of advertisers.

The confidential document dated this year detailed how by monitoring posts, comments and interactions on the site, Facebook can figure out when people as young as 14 feel “defeated”, “overwhelmed”, “stressed”, “anxious”, “nervous”, “stupid”, “silly”, “useless”, and a “failure”.

Such information gathered through a system dubbed sentiment analysis could be used by advertisers to target young Facebook users when they are potentially more vulnerable.

While Google is the king of the online advertising world, Facebook is the other major player which dominates the industry worth about $80 billion last year.

But Facebook is not one to rest on its laurels. The leaked document shows it has been honing the covert tools its uses to gain useful psychological insights on young Australian and New Zealanders in high school and tertiary education.

It has been revealed Facebook is using surveillance to target advertising at vulnerable Australian children.

The social media services we use can derive immense insight and personal information about us and our moods from the way we use them, and arguably none is more fastidious in that regard than Facebook which harvests immense data on its users.

The secret document was put together by two Australian Facebook execs and includes information about when young people are likely to feel excited, reflective, as well as other emotions related to overcoming fears.

“Monday-Thursday is about building confidence; the weekend is for broadcasting achievements,” the document said, according to the report.

Facebook did not return attempts by news.com.au to comment on the issue but was quick to issue an apology and told The Australian that it will conduct an investigation into the matter, admitting it was inappropriate to target young children in such a way.

“The data on which this research is based was aggregated and presented consistent with applicable privacy and legal protections, including the removal of any personally identifiable information,” Facebook said in a statement issued to the newspaper.

However there is suggestion that the research could be in breach of Australian guidelines for advertising and marketing towards children.

Many commentators have suspected Facebook engaged in this sort of cynical exploitation of the data it gathers but the leaked document is scarce proof.

Mark Zuckerberg’s company has not been shy about exploring ways it can manipulate the data it collects on users.

For one week in 2012, Facebook ran an experiment on some of its users in which it altered the algorithms it used determine which status updates appeared in the news feed of nearly 700,000 randomly selected users based on the post’s emotional content.

Posts were determined to be either negative or positive and Facebook wanted to see if it could make the selected group sad by showing them more negative posts in their feed. It deemed it could.

The results were published in a scientific journal but Facebook was criticised by those concerned about the potential of the company to engage in social engineering for commercial benefit.

Facebook’s Data Use Policy warns users that the company “may use the information we receive about you … for internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement.”

Currently information about your relationship status, location, age, number of friends and the manner and frequency with which you access the site is sold to advertisers. But according to the report, Facebook is also seeking to sell ads to users concerned with insights gleaned from posts such as those concerned with body confidence and losing weight.

1.5GB 4G data per day for 70 days at Rs – 497 in Idea Cellular

1.5GB 4G data per day for 70 days at Rs - 497 in Idea Cellular

Telecom operators in India are on a roll at the moment. After launching an array of new tariff plans for its users in the last few weeks, Idea Cellular, the country’s third largest telecom operator has now come up with a new scheme that offers 1.5GB data per day for 70 days, similar to Airtel’s plan.

1.5GB 4G data per day for 70 days at Rs - 497 in Idea Cellular
1.5GB 4G data per day for 70 days at Rs – 497 in Idea Cellular

One of our readers brought to our attention that Idea is now offering 1.5GB data per day, which will be valid for 70 days. This plan also offers unlimited voice calls within Idea to Idea network and 3000 minutes to other networks, which will also be valid for 70 days.

After the completion of 3000 minutes, voice calls will be charged at standard rates. Do make a note that this plan is only available for select Idea prepaid customers who will be informed about the offer via an SMS or a pop-up.

As said earlier, this scheme is aimed at Airtel’s Rs. 499 plan that offers 1.25GB data per day along with unlimited voice calling to any network across India. However, Airtel is offering the plan for only 56 days, whereas Idea is offering the same for 70 days. Besides, Idea’s plan also comes with 0.25GB extra data per day.

We have earlier reported that Airtel has silently decreased the validity period of its newly launched prepaid plans such as Rs. 244, Rs. 399, Rs. 499, etc. from 70 days to 56 days without any prior information to the customers.

Earlier this month, we have exclusively reported about the Idea’s Rs. 297 and Rs. 447 prepaid plans, which are also aimed to compete with Airtel’s Rs. 244 and Rs. 399 plans. The Rs. 297 plan in Idea offers 1GB data per day for 70 days along with unlimited on-net voice calling, while the Rs. 447 plans offer 1GB data per day and unlimited calling to any network across the country.

Surprising thing Aussies investing millions in

An AES Advancion Energy Storage video explaining how large-scale battery storage works.

People are investing in community solar and wind projects.

THE Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull may be talking up the future of “clean coal” but ordinary Australians are putting their money elsewhere.

The Community Power Agency has produced a snapshot of community-owned energy projects and found Australians had financed more than 30 wind and solar projects to the tune of almost $24 million in the last six years.

The projects are so popular, they are being funded within hours of being offered in many cases.

Almost 8000kW of renewable energy projects has been funded using the community-ownership model — enough to power a small town.

Projects have included $1.4 million raised to install 2000 panels on top of Sydney’s International Convention Centre, $180,000 for 600 panels at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre and $119,800 raised to install 396 panels on top of the Shoalhaven Heads Bowling and Recreation Club.

ClearSky is one of the bodies helping to connect businesses with Australians willing to help them fund their solar panels.

Today, a massive 228 kW solar system will be switched on at Bakers Maison, an industrial bakers located in Revesby in Sydney’s west, thanks to $390,000 raised from 20 investors in just six hours.

ClearSky founding director Dr Christina said high demand from investors meant it took only a few hours to fully fund such projects with applications coming from every state in Australia.

“Everyday Australians want to invest their money ethically and they are jumping at the opportunity to help businesses go solar,” Dr Kirsch said.

The business pays community investors for the solar power it uses over a seven to 10 year term.

The electricity is much cheaper than power offered on the mainstream market but is still high enough to cover the original sum invested, plus a return of about 7 per cent for investors. When the term ends, the business owns the system.

Sydney resident Monica Ahn, 28, was one of 150 people who raised $17,500 in just nine minutes to install a 29.9kW solar farm on the roof of the Young Henry’s brewery in Sydney’s inner west.

Ms Ahn spent $250 on buying 250 shares in the Pingala project, which is expected to make a return on investment of about 7-8 per cent.

But Ms Ahn told news.com.au she wasn’t motivated by financial incentives, it was more to do with supporting renewable energy.

“It’s a really clever business model and got the community involved, that’s why I was interested,” she said.

But it’s not just small projects that are being funded. In Western Australia, $6.1 million was raised to build two wind turbines in Denmark and another $9.9 million was raised for two turbines in Daylesford, Victoria.

Community Power Agency founding director Nicky Ison said the majority of recent community projects were financed within hours of going out to the community, because investor demand was outstripping supply.

Ms Ison said there were more than 90 community energy groups across the country preparing to build and run their own projects, and if governments invested a little of their own capital in supporting them then the sector could more than treble.

“Australians are saying loudly and clearly — we want to invest in renewable energy in this country and we want to invest in our owm communities,” she said.

“This means that jobs and investment stay local and communities have ownership over their own power again.

“We think for these reasons community energy is shaping as a major disrupter of our energy system.”

The agency says governments can help kick-start new projects by building a network of support hubs across the country. These hubs would offer legal and technical advice to local volunteer groups and help them cut through red tape that’s stalling many projects.”

Overall Australians are now generating enough solar power to light up 1.3 million average households — nearly all the homes in Melbourne.

Figures released last week showed there was six gigawatts of solar power installed across the country, with the “sunshine state” of Queensland leading the charge.

Australian Photovoltaic Institute chair Dr Renate Egan said Aussie homeowners, businesses and large-scale solar farms had all contributed to an extra 1GW of solar being added to the grid over the past year.

“Solar power now makes up 11 per cent of our country’s total electricity generation capacity with more solar added to the system in 2016 than any other fuel type,” he said.

“These numbers are so big they can be difficult to picture, but to put 6GW into perspective – that is twice the capacity of Australia’s largest coal-fired power station, Loy Yang in Victoria.”

As of April 2017 there was a total of 1.67 million PV solar installations in Australia, covering 21 per cent of suitable rooftops, which is the highest penetration of rooftop solar in the world.

In total, these solar installations collectively generate 8400 GW/hr of energy each year, which meets approximately 3.3 per cent of Australian demand.

250 applications and no job

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on Facebook on April 18 that the government would scrap the controversial 457 visa-. He had not yet fronted the media. ?We?re putting jobs first, we?re putting Australians first,? Turnbull said. ?We are an immigration nation but the fact remains Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs. So we are abolishing the 457 visas; the visas that bring temporary foreign workers into our country. ?We will no longer allow 457 visas to be passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians.? Turnbull said the visa would be replaced with another that will require qualified applicants meet a need for their skills, as well as outlining their previous work history and ensuring English proficiency. ?To help train Australians to fill skills gaps, we will also establish a new training fund,? Turnbull said. Credit: Malcolm Turnbull via Storyful

IT graduate James* says he’s applied for more than 250 jobs in Australia that he believes he’s qualified for, but can only find work in the US.

AT 25 years old, James was living a tech-head’s dream.

The university graduate had been snapped up by a global tech giant after a short stint in software development at a Melbourne company.

As a project manager at Amazon’s Seattle campus, he was in a high responsibility role and leading projects with massive scale.

The pressure was huge and the reward proportionally significant. The young techie was developing skills and gaining experience that would put him in good stead for the rest of his career. He’d be was dealing with problems that involved 20 to 30 other teams, servicing a large portion of the company’s customer base, on projects that needed to be turned around super fast.

James loved the work and the culture, but he didn’t necessarily want to work his way up at one of the Silicon Valley giants where most IT graduates dream of making their mark. He wanted to come home, and bring his skills to Australia.

But, bizarrely, he says he’s found the tech job market down under far more difficult to crack.

James is not his real name by the way, he’s chosen to withhold that so not to further limit his career opportunities.

IT graduate James* says he's applied for more than 250 jobs in Australia that he believes he's qualified for, but can only find work in the US.

Since leaving his job at Amazon, James has tried to get a job in Australia that he believes his experience from Amazon and previous roles have readied him for.

The jobs are out there and he’s been putting his hand up for them, but nothing’s biting.

Over the past six months, James says he has applied for 10 to 20 jobs in the tech industry each week. By his own count, the would-be IT worker is up to 250 applications, and still, nothing.

“It’s incredibly disappointing,” he told news.com.au. “One thing I’ve started asking recruiters a lot is ‘what have I done wrong?’ They tell me ‘you actually haven’t, your resume’s solid, your history is solid’.

“There’s nothing wrong. It’s just the mentality in this country is that you must have three years or you must have five years experience.

“They’re looking for a number on a piece of paper but not looking at skills and ability. Why do I need specific experience when I have the ability to learn on the run?”

The jobs James has been applying for are mainly project manager, business analyst and delivery lead roles.

In the few call backs he’s had, the 28-year-old says he’s been told he was rejected because he doesn’t have three years experience.

“The three-year mandate is an IT thing that’s happened for the past 20 to 30 years. It’s considered a good amount of time that you’ve learnt the job,” he said. “The problem in Australia has become that no one wants to train anyone to get that three years to take on a more senior job.

“The mentality is if we train them, they leave, and then it’s a waste of money. So, let’s never train them.”

James got in touch with news.com.au after reading an article about the tech industry’s response to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to restrict 457 visas, the program that allows companies to hire foreign workers to do jobs they can’t find Australians with the right skills to fill.

In it, CEO of IT industry group TechSydney Dean McEvoy argued there were no available Australians that could fill some senior tech jobs.

“The thing to understand about the growing of fast growth technology company is it takes a very different skills set than the companies that exist already within the industry in Australia,” he said. “Some of these are skills that can’t really be taught, you only get them through experience. So the best way to learn is only by doing, and the only people who have done these jobs, at the moment, are overseas.”

To this, James said: “I want to stay in Australia, I am qualified, yet no one wants me. Think about the benefits our country would have by upskilling the many IT workers already here instead of always wanting a ‘senior’ position and therefore pushing out the younger management material.”

Encouraging training and giving Australians jobs first is the whole point of the government’s proposed visa overhaul. The tech industry has been vocal in denying that it fails to give Australian workers sufficient training, and that it needs to have the capacity to hire foreign workers.

The IT industry argues Australians applying for the jobs they need to fill don’t have the experience, but Aussies are crying out for training and opportunities. Picture: Thinkstock

James doesn’t know if 457 visa holders are taking the jobs he’s applying for. He doesn’t know who is.

He’s not that worried either, because after six months of disappointment he was again approached and has already been accepted into the final round of interviews for a job at a leading tech company.

He says this is the danger the industry is causing itself, losing talent to the US and other labour markets by overlooking what right in front of it.

When he worked at Amazon, he said he’d have constant meetings with new teams, and every few meetings there’d be another Aussie in the room. He says they were all over campus, and that’s just one company.

“Then you’ve got Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Apple, etc. Australians are everywhere because they have a good reputation and a different way of thinking, and that seems to be less valued in Australia than elsewhere in the world,” he said.

“Australians have a great reputation. Great education, experience and a different way of thinking. Australians think differently and that is incredibly valuable, and it’s something that Australian businesses have stopped seeing.

“It’s really about the fact that the Australian industry is really not noticing the quality of people walking around their own country and they’re losing them rapidly overseas. I’m now 28 and I’m not valued in this country. That hurts. That sucks.”

How to get Google Assistant on your Windows, Mac, or Linux Machine

Google Assistant is Google’s answer to Amazon’s Alexa smart home assistant. Initially only available with limited functionality in the Google Allo application, Google Assistant later rolled out with the Google Home and Pixel smartphones to bring the full power of Google’s assistant to consumers.

After a few months of waiting, smartphones running Android 6.0+ also received Google Assistant, and just a few days ago Google launched the Google Assistant SDK which allows Assistant to be run on basically any platform. Today, we will show you how to install Google Assistant onto your Windows, Mac, or Linux machine using Python.

Note: at this point in time, this is purely for educational purposes. There’s no fancy GUI for you to play with, and installing Assistant requires you to use the command line.

Get Google Assistant on Windows/Mac/Linux Machines

Requirements:

You’ll need to have Python installed no matter whether or not you are using Windows, macOS, or a GNU/Linux distribution. Installation is fairly simple and already well-documented by the Python wiki, so we won’t go into many details about getting Python up and running on your machine.

Once you’ve got Python working on your machine (you can confirm it is working by opening up a terminal/command prompt and then simply typing python.) If you see the terminal/command prompt return the current Python version on your computer, then you’re golden.

Next, before we can install the necessary files to get Google Assistant working, we need to enable access to the Google Assistant API in the Google Cloud Platform Console.

Configure the Google Assistant API

What follows are step-by-step instructions walking you through the process to enable the Google Assistant API in the Cloud Platform Console so you can access Google Assistant through the Python program. All of these steps are platform independent, meaning that the steps are the same for Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux users.

  1. Go to the Projects page in the Google Cloud Platform Console.
  2. Click on “Create Project” up top.
  3. Name the Project “My Google Assistant” and click “Create.”
  4. Wait a few seconds for the Console to create your new Project. You should see a spinning progress icon in the top right. After it is done creating your Project, you will be brought to your Project’s configuration page.
  5. Click this link to go straight to the Google Assistant API page. Up top, click “Enable.”
  6. Google will warn you that you need to create credentials to use this API. Click “Create credentials” in the top right. This will take you to a setup wizard page where Google helps you figure out what kind of credentials you need to use this API.
  7. Under “where will you be calling the API from”, select “Other UI (e.g. Windows, CLI tool)“. For “what data will you be accessing” select the “User data” circle. Now tap “what credentials do I need?”
  8. Google should recommend that you create an OAuth 2.0 client ID. Name the Client ID anything you want, for example, your name + Desktop. Once done picking a name, click “create client ID.”
  9. Under “product name shown to users” enter “My Google Assistant.” Click continue.
  10. Click “done.” There’s no need to click download here as we only need the client secret, which we will download next.
  11. Now under the list of OAuth 2.0 client IDs, you should see the client ID you just made. All the way to the right, click on the download icon to download the client_secret_XXX.json file, where ‘XXX’ is your client ID. Save this file anywhere on your computer, ideally in a new folder called “googleassistant.”
  12. Go to the Activity controls page for your Google account and make sure that “Web & App Activity”, “Location History”, “Device Information”, and “Voice & Audio Activity” are enabled. This is so Google Assistant can actually read you personalized information.

We have now created a mechanism for a client, in this case our Windows/Mac/Linux machine, to access the Google Assistant API under our Google account. Next we need to set up the client that will access the Google Assistant API.

Install the Google Assistant Sample Python Project

Although Google recommends that you set up Python virtual environments to isolate the Google Assistant SDK and its dependencies from other Python system packages, we’re going to skip this step as it’s unlikely that you’ll play around with this for more than a few minutes. You can easily go back to the Cloud Platform Console and disable the API if you’re worried about the potential for other programs to access your Google account.

Open up a terminal/command prompt window and go through the following steps. First, enter this command:

py -m pip install google-assistant-sdk[samples]

You should see a whole bunch of dependencies being downloaded and installed when you enter this command. These are needed for the sample Python project to work. Wait for it to finish.

Once it’s done, next enter the following command (make sure to adjust the path):

py -m googlesamples.assistant.auth_helpers --client-secrets path\to\your\client_secret_XXX.apps.googleusercontent.com.json

In the command prompt, you will see a response telling you to visit a URL in order to authorize the application.

Copy and paste this URL into your browser. Select the same Google account that you used to configure the Google Assistant API. On the next page, you will see a text box that contains your client’s Access Token.

Copy that Access token and paste it into the command prompt where it asks you for the authorization code. If done correctly, you will see a response that your credentials have been saved.

Test the Google Assistant

The first thing you’ll want to test is whether or not Google Assistant is able to record audio from your microphone. Enter the following command into a command prompt, which will record 5 seconds of audio and play it back to you:

python -m googlesamples.assistant.audio_helpers

If you hear your audio played back to you, then enter this command to begin talking to Google Assistant:

python -m googlesamples.assistant

Wait for the command prompt to say “press Enter to send a new request”, then press Enter to begin talking to Google Assistant. After you’re done speaking, the command prompt will display a transcript of what you just stated and then play back the response. If you see a warning afterwards, just ignore it.

Have fun playing with Google Assistant on your Windows, macOS, or GNU/Linux machine! I played with it for only a few minutes before getting bored with it. It’s not particularly useful in this format, but it is a very quick demonstration of the possibilities that the new Google Assistant SDK represents. Perhaps we may see desktop apps or browser extensions taking advantage of this functionality in the near future.

Fruit juicers and hair brushes are now part of the Internet of (useless) Things

If ever proof were needed that not everything is improved by connecting a device to the Internet, the Juicero, a fruit and vegetable juicing machine, is it. At US $400, the Juicero produces a glass of juice from an US $8 Juicero pack containing pre-mashed fruit and vegetables. It turns out however, that the machine is a completely unecessary part to this process because the juice can be squeezed out of the packs by hand.

The Juicero is connected to the Internet however and this, the CEO has claimed, is what makes the machine essential to the production of juice. Should there be a problem with the packs of juice that are delivered to customers, the machines can be remotely instructed to warn the customer. Of course, this means that the machines are being closely monitored by the company, so people making there juice this way have presumably decided to forego their privacy.

Investors allegedly saw something in this machine that the public is having a hard time understanding. Google’s venture capital arm, amongst others, invested US $120 million in the company.

Juicero represents a perfect example of how technology for technology’s sake has become a marketing strategy aimed at people who identify as being a connected, innovative, and technologically fluent.

The Juicero has highlighted the redundancy of adding technology, Internet connectivity, data analytics and mobile apps to products. But the Juicero joins a long list of products that are as high-tech as they are lacking in utility.

Adding Bluetooth and Internet connectivity to a device, making it part of the Internet of Things has simply not brought about any additional benefits. This has been especially true of home devices that are controlled or interacted with by everyone in the household. Making sure that everyone in a family, or shared living space, has an app, properly configured to communicate with the devices, and are all trained to use it becomes a major IT challenge. It is simply far easier to pick up a remote or walk over to the device and interact with it manually.

The Bluetooth connected Nespresso coffee maker for example allows you to start the coffee brewing process from a mobile app. Only however, once a pod has been loaded, water poured into the reservoir, and the cup placed ready to receive the coffee. The added connectivity simply adds to the cost without significant benefit.

The Internet connected air conditioner suffers the same problem. There are simply very few times when you want to be able to control the temperature of a room that you are not actually in .

A possible justification for enhancing some devices with technology has been their role in potentially helping people manage health and wellbeing and in particular, the ever-growing problem of obesity.

The HAPIfork has been pitched as a technological solution to helping people lose weight by encouraging slower eating. In this case, it is a fork that is not only connected to a mobile app to provide data on eating habits, but also vibrates when people using it are eating too fast.

The only problem is, there is little evidence that eating slowly actually makes any difference to people’s weight. Worse still, a recent study showed that although giving feedback through a fork slowed eating, it made no difference to the total amount of food consumed.

The health and wellbeing justification for technology in products becomes stretched however with its application in other areas.

A Bluetooth connected, mobile app equipped, toothbrush guides and educates its users how to brush their teeth properly.

The Withings Hair Coach, a Bluetooth and mobile app-equipped hair brush educates its users in how to brush their hair correctly without causing any damage.

Interestingly, this last device has come from a collaboration between Withings and two cosmetic companies, Kérastase and L’Oréal. For years, cosmetic companies have practised their own type of product enhancement by dressing up products with pseudoscience in order to justify a premium price. The move to use technology in the same way would seem like a natural next step.

Even if these devices did bring the benefits they claim, there would still be the problem that people would not continue to use them for very long. There are simply not the incentives to use the products on a consistent basis for very long.

New 148 Plan launched from RCom with 70GB 4GB Data for 70 Days

New 148 Plan launched from RCom with 70GB 4GB Data for 70 Days

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCom) will be revamping its monthly tariff plans for May and has already sent out the details of the new offers to all the retailers across the country. According to a retailer from Andhra Pradesh circle, RCom will be launching new first recharge tariff plan of Rs. 148.

New 148 Plan launched from RCom with 70GB 4GB Data for 70 Days

With the FR 148 plan, the telco will be offering benefits for ten weeks, on-par with other telecom operators. Do make a note that this new scheme is only for the residents of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh circle. The new FR 148 plan provides 1GB data per day for 70 days along with Rs. 50 talk time.

However, this new plan doesn’t offer any voice calling benefits like other operators. However, you can make voice calls at just 25 paise/minute. All these benefits will be valid for 70 days including the Rs. 50 talk time.
Besides the FR 148 plan, RCom will also roll out another two plans of FRC 54 and FRC 61. Under the FRC 54 plan, the company is offering 1GB 4G data per day for 28 days along with Reliance to Reliance calls at 10 paise/minute and other local/STD calls at 25 paise/minute.

The FRC 61 plan also offers 1GB 4G data per day for 28 days, but the voice calling benefits are different from the FRC 54 plan. This plan costs 1 paise/6 sec for Reliance to Reliance calls and 1 paise/2 sec for local/STD calls.

These new plans from RCom are only for new users, which is underwhelming as other telecom operators are offering plans for existing prepaid users as well. Nevertheless, RCom is also charging way less than what others are charging although it offers limited to voice calling benefits.

India’s leading telecom operator has come up with a new plan of Rs. 399 offering 1GB data per day and unlimited calling to any network across India for 56 days. Idea Cellular also has a plan of Rs. 447 providing 1GB data per day and unlimited calls for 70 days.
