Cerberus Updated to v3.5, Adds a “Fake Shutdown” Feature
Over the years, Android hasn’t always had the best theft protection services available to the end user. Google ended up launching the Android Device Manager as a basic way to locate a stolen smartphone or tablet, but it isn’t as feature-packed as some would like. Even with it being rebranded as Find My Device in the Google Play Protect suite, many look for features which Google does not offer. Today, the developers behind Cerberus have pushed out a new update to version 3.5 and it comes with a highly requested feature.
For those who have been with us that long, you may remember when we did a review of the Cerberus application back in 2011. Over the years it has grown in popularity and the developers have added more and more features into the application as well. So we decided to cover it again a couple of years ago so the community has an idea as to how far Cerberus has come. It’s these features which give some of us in the Android community peace of mind when it comes to our smartphones.
This is especially true when we spend $500 or more on a new device, and I can’t blame anyone who feels they need this layer of protection with a device like the Galaxy Note 8 which will surpass $1,000 after taxes. With Cerberus, you can remotely wipe the device, wipe the SD card, pull the SMS and call logs, get the device’s location history, take photos, record videos and so much more. Now with this new update to version 3.5, you can also trigger a fake shutdown animation.
If enabled, you do this by pressing the power button while you’re at the lock screen. The idea here is that if you feel the device is about to get stolen, trigger this fake shutdown and the animation begins. Hopefully the thief will think it has actually been shut down and will simply put the device in their pocket as they leave. Since it really isn’t shut down though, you still have access to it remotely, and Cerberus is still doing things such as collecting location data.
