Google Pixel 2 Seemingly Receives FCC Certification, Mentions Android 8.0.1, Active Edge and More

Recent rumors have suggested we’re getting very close to the official release of Android 8.0. With Google finalizing that update, many have started working on future updates as we’ve even seen the latest update to the Android Support Library mentioning a bug fix for “O-MR1” (Maintenance Release 1) devices. Some assumed this meant the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL would be launching with Android 8.1 (and it still might), an FCC filing shows it was seemingly certified using Android 8.0.1.

So while a lot of attention within the Android community lately has been put on the Galaxy Note 8, LG V30 and even the upcoming Android 8.0 release, it looks like Google’s next smartphone is one step closer to its official release date. Although, if we look back to last year and assume Google will stick to a similar release cycle, then the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will release sometime in October of this year. However, Google employees even said they were rushing to get their 2016 flagship out the door so that could have caused a delay.

In any case, recent rumors have suggested that the Pixel 2 was to be equipped with the same squeezing feature that HTC included in the U11 this year. This new FCC filing (by HTC) shows that Google has come up with a name for this feature on the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL, and it looks like it’ll be dubbed “Active Edge”. In the same screenshot, we can see the phone is coming with Android 8.0.1, and that it’ll sport the same Pixel-exclusive design for its navigation bar and settings menu accents.

The screenshots we see in the FCC filing say this feature has been enabled and that you can “squeeze for your assistant.” It makes sense that Google would want to encourage more people to use Google Assistant, but right now it’s unclear if we’ll be able to customize this for different features. Google has a history of letting people customize various aspects of its software, but you long-pressing on the home button has always been used to launch as assistant service. It’s also worth noting that the model name listed is G011A, the same as an HTC model which received certification by the WiFi alliance not too long ago. The FCC filing also seems to indicate that this device will come with a Snapdragon 835, though a possible 836 could share its codenumber as we’ve seen in the past.
