Report: Smartphone Shipments Reach 360.4 Million for Q2 2017

It’s difficult for us to get concrete shipment numbers from dozens of different smartphone vendors, so there are a number of companies out there that are dedicated to this type of research. They generally partner with retailers from around the world to find out how many devices were shipped to them throughout the year. Strategy Analytics is a big name in this field and they have just released their report for both smartphone shipments and marketshare for the second quarter of 2017.

The headlining statistic here is that overall smartphone shipments reached 360.4 million units for Q2 2017. We’ve seen this industry grow over the years and many had felt it was starting to plateau recently. This doesn’t seem to be the case this quarter as last year during the same time frame Strategy Analytics had said there were 341.5 million units shipped. So we’re clearly seeing growth in the industry and it looks like it’s the big 5 who are seeing most of it.

During the second quarter of 2017, Samsung reportedly shipped 79.5 million (up from 77.6 last year). Then we have Apple who hit 41.0 million (which again is up from 40.4 last year). Next on the list is OPPO who was able to ship 29.5 million or the quarter (up from only 18.0 million last year). And rounding up this list we have Xiaomi who shipped 23.2 million (they had only shipped 14.7 million last year). The rest of this list is just labeled Others and they shipped 148.8 million this past quarter when last year they had shipped 158.8 million.

So we’re seeing a decrease in this ‘other’ category, which lumps all of the lesser known smartphone OEMs (such as HTC, LG, etc.) together. This report from Strategy Analytics also shows marketshare percentages from the data they have at hand. According to them, Samsung dropped to 21.1% (from 22.7%), Apple dropped to 11.4% (from 11.8%), Huawei jumped to 10.7% (from 9.4%), OPPO saw a big jump to 8.2% (from 5.3%), and Xiaomi went to 6.4% (up from 4.3%).

As with all reports, these numbers aren’t perfectly accurate and are just pulled from the data Strategy Analytics was able to get their hands on. Still, it gives us a good idea at what type of shape the smartphone industry is in, along with some of the biggest smartphone OEMs too.
