Game Review: Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

Everyone who has played Dishonored has fallen in love with its dystopian steampunk world despite it being kind of bleak. Death of the Outsider is a standalone DLC that builds on this bleak world and effectively ends the saga with the Death of the Outsider.

The Outsider, as we have learnt from previous games, is pretty much god in Dishonored and is responsible for much of the events in the previous games. Another familiar face, Billie Lurk, plays the protagonist in this and is tasked by her mentor Daud to end the Outsider.

Like with any Dishonored game, Billie comes with an arsenal of supernatural abilities. The movement ability is called Displace, which is similar to Corvo's Blink ability — it lets you teleport to a location and back again. However, you just can't teleport like Corvo. Instead, you have to drop a ghost image of yourself to the target location
and it is limited by line-of-sight.

Dark vision has also been replaced with Foresight, instead of see through walls you can now freeze time and fly around marking targets for tracking. You can also drop a Displace ghost in a location that is further away using this ability, which is very useful in a lot of situations.

The most interesting ability is called Semblance which lets you knock people out and disguise yourself as them — somewhere between Hitman and the Faceless Men. You don't rip the target's face off, but, extract some sort of face energy that lets other people think you are the person you are impersonating. Although, beware, because dogs aren't as easily tricked.

All these abilities drain your void energy and you may want to keep an eye on that, especially, while using Semblance. Fortunately, void energy keeps replenishing itself.
The game is short, spanning around 10 hours. There are side missions that can extend that time, but not by much. The contact missions in the game also don't have a significant impact on the world on the whole. So, killing or just knocking out characters is insignificant.

The game on PC looks brilliant, the levels are beautifully designed and you will want to just look around for a bit, because it looks so good. In keeping with Dishonored tradition, there are also lots of nooks and crannies to find and explore and the Foresight ability is tailormade to make this task a lot simpler. Also, in the vein of the earlier games are puzzles that help you unlock things. There haven't been many changes made to how these work — a seasoned Dishonored player would be easily able to crack them.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is a great end to the saga that began with Dishonored. Even though it was short and lacked an in-depth story, it was still satisfying in the end. This, despite the end being advertised in the title of the game. The new abilities are fun to use and has changed the Dishonored gameplay for the better. At its price point, there is very little to fault the game on. Definite must have for fans of the series.
