Ranji Trophy: Ajinkya Rahane returns as Mumbai eye outright win vs Odisha

Forty one-time Ranji Trophy champions and last year's runners-up Mumbai have a strong chance to register their first outright win of the season against a lowly Odisha in a Group 'C' encounter at Bhubaneswar starting today. Though Mumbai will be missing out on the services of in-form batsman Shreyas Iyer who is on national duty for the T20I series against New Zealand, the visitors will be boosted by the return of Test batsman Ajinkya Rahane and pacer Shardul Thakur.

Dangerous trio
Even fit-again pacer Tushar Deshpande has been included in the side and is likely to form a good bowling combination with Thakur and experienced pacer Dhawal Kulkarni. However, Mumbai's spin department once again seems highly dependent on the left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil. Mumbai is placed fourth in the group with four points from two games just above Odisha, who are fifth with two points in as many games.

Mumbai's imperfect past
When the last time these two teams clashed at Wankhede Stadium in December 2013, Mumbai had to be satisfied with three points despite making Odisha follow on after hosts skipper Wasim Jaffer (143) and Hiken Shah (170) registered centuries. In response to Mumbai's 501 for nine declared, Odisha managed to score 256 in the first innings and compile 356 for five in their second essay in a draw. Natraj Behera scored a hundred in each innings for Odisha.

I'm open to bat in any position for India: Mumbai cricketer Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer, 22, has come close several times on making his international debut, but has missed out on the chances to be in the playing XI of the Indian team. On the eve of the first T20 International between India and New Zealand, the Mumbai opener was hopeful of getting a chance in the series. "I am hoping that if I am selected (in the squad) then I will play as well. We have three matches and if I play even one then it is a good feeling," Iyer said.

Later in the nets, Iyer got hit on his right forearm while batting and stopped practice. At the time of filing this report (8pm) there was no official update from the BCCI or the team management on Iyer's status. Even if the opener is fit to play, the team management will have a hard time deciding his batting slot as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have been the in-form openers in limited-overs cricket. Iyer, though said that he has no problem playing at any position. "I am very flexible and I don't mind batting at any number," he stated.

Google is Extending Preferred Care to 2 Years and Eliminating Deductibles for Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL Customers

Rejoice! If you own a brand new Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL, then we have some good news to share. Google is sending out emails to its Preferred Care customers tonight telling them that they are extending the manufacturer’s warranty from 1 to 2 years. Not only that, they are also eliminating deductibles if you experience hardware failures due to normal wear and tear during the warranty period!

This news comes in light of the recent display-related troubles that some Pixel 2 XL owners have been having experiencing. Some people took issue with the muted colors of the display’s default calibration profile while others experienced temporary burn in and blue tint color shifting. To address these issues, Google announced that they would offer an update that would bring a more saturated color profile to the Google Pixel 2 XL. Furthermore, to make things up to their customers, they announced that they would extend the 1 year manufacturer warranty to 2 years.

At the time, however, the company stated that Preferred Care customers would not receive an extension to their warranty contract. Preferred Care customers were understandably miffed that regular customers would receive these added benefits but their premium warranty contract did not receive any extra benefits. Given that customers have to pay $129 to buy Preferred Care and also a $79 deductible to process a claim, it seemed odd that nothing would be done for these users.

Google Pixel 2 Preferred Care

Email sent out to customers

Thankfully, Google has reversed course and is now offering 2 years of warranty under the Preferred Care plan, and they’re even waiving the deductible on top of it! This might sweeten the deal for existing users and entice even more people into purchasing the plan. Personally, I baby every device I own but for those of you who are more prone to accidentally damage your device (or just want to be extra cautious), then you’ll have another year of Preferred Care coverage to enjoy.

Thanks XDA Member Nathan for the tip!

Woolworths Rewards Cards Can Now Be Added to the Wallet App in Australia

Woolworths customers in Australia who have a Woolworths rewards card can now add their cards to the Wallet app to make it easier to earn and use rewards points when checking out.

Apple added a mention of the new Woolworths Rewards option to its Apple Pay website today, and the feature is outlined on the Woolworths website.

Woolworths customers can open the Wallet app and scan their cards using the standard procedure necessary to add a card to Wallet. From there, the Rewards card is digital and customers can collect and use rewards points and discounts at checkout simply by tapping their iPhones at an NFC-capable register with a finger on the Touch ID Home button.

With the digital card, there’s no need to pull out a physical rewards card when checking out, making for a faster checkout process, especially as the Rewards card will come up automatically when checking out at a Woolworths location. Digital Rewards cards from Woolworths will also show current points balance and savings at a glance in the Wallet app.

Customers who add their Rewards cards to Apple Wallet and then use it at checkout when making a purchase of $0.05 or more can earn 500 bonus points. The promotion will be available through November 30, 2017.

IND vs NZ: All eyes on Ashish Nehra; Virat Kohli aims to break 10-year jinx

New Zealand in the recent past have looked to be the only team that has troubled India when it comes to playing in coloured clothing. The Kiwis have a flawless 5-0 record against the Men in Blue when it comes to T20 internationals. Today when the two teams meet again at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium here in the opening encounter of the three-match T20 series, India skipper Virat Kohli would expect his troops to stop the Kiwi winning-run that has lasted over a decade even as Kane Williamson's side tries to extend it further to keep their No. 1 ranking intact.

No practice for Nehra
Yesterday's practice session being an optional one for Team India, only members like Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Ashish Nehra attended it. While all those present practiced, Nehra, who earlier announced that the first T20 against New Zealand would be his last international match, was seen near the nets towards the end of the practice session and that also to collect an envelope from one of the team officials. Though it is expected that the veteran left-arm seamer will make the playing XI for his last game, there has been some criticism towards the selectors, who by announcing Nehra's name in the squad, have in a way forced the captain to include the pacer in the playing XI. In such a scenario, if Nehra is not included, it could turn out to be an embarrassment for the player as well the selectors.

In India's last T20 series against Australia, Nehra did not get any game and it would require some adjustment for the team management to accommodate the veteran pacer this time. New Zealand look confident of putting up a good show and are not complacent about their unbeaten record against India. Attacking batsman Colin Munro, who scored a fine half century in the series-deciding third and final ODI, felt that New Zealand have been "lucky for the last couple of years to be successful." He is also aware about the ability of India's pace duo Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, describing them as the "best" new-ball bowlers in the sub-continent.

Kiwis taking no chances
It is not that Williamson's team have had it easy, according to Munro as injuries to their limited-over star performers Mitchell McClenaghan and Luke Ronchi hurt the team combination. "Their absence has been felt but (Tom) Latham has done really well this season. We have got an experienced bowling attack," said Munro. Another player who could help New Zealand's chances is middle-order batsman Ross Taylor whose good form in the ODIs have earned him a recall to the T20I side after being out for over a year.

2nd Test: Jason Holder, Shane Dowrich help Windies take lead against Zimbabwe

An unbroken 144-run stand for the eighth wicket between Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich ensured the West Indies emerged from day three of the second Test against Zimbabwe on Tuesday with a vital first-innings lead. Holder and Dowrich came together with the West Indies reeling on 230 for seven, still 96 runs short of Zimbabwe's first-innings total, after Sikandar Raza tore into the tourists with a maiden five-wicket haul. They turned the game on its head with a counter-attacking partnership as Dowrich ended Tuesday unbeaten on a career-best 75, while Holder contributed 71 not out. That saw the West Indies to stumps on 374 for seven, leading by 48 runs.

Jason Holder
Jason Holder

"Sometimes you're going to have to raise your hand and say that we tried everything and it didn't work because the opposition have batted well," Raza said. "Credit to them for batting that well." The record partnership for the eighth wicket at Queens Sports Club took some of the shine off the offspinner's five for 82, which was the first five-wicket haul by a Zimbabwean in Tests at the ground since 2003. Having contributed 80 in the first innings, Raza was also the fifth Zimbabwean to score a 50 and take five wickets in a Test.

While the second evening had produced attritional cricket as the West Indians crawled to stumps on 78 for one, the tourists were more adventurous on day three with opener Kieran Powell leading the way in a 55-run stand for the second wicket with nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo. It took the introduction of Raza to change the course of the morning, as he had Bishoo caught and bowled for 23 and then trapped Kyle Hope lbw for one.

Powell looked destined for a fourth Test century after he was dropped on 85 by Graeme Cremer, but seamer Chris Mpofu ensured the mistake was not costly as he used the second new ball to have the opener caught at gully for 90. An attacking 56-run stand for the fifth wicket between Shai Hope and Roston Chase put the West Indies back on top after lunch, before Raza intervened once again. After Chase was trapped lbw for 32 by the offspinner, Hope was bowled for 40 and Jermaine Blackwood became Raza's fifth victim. With a large deficit and just three wickets in hand the West Indies looked set to concede a first-innings lead on a difficult pitch, but Dowrich and Holder swung the match back in their favour. "We're only 48 runs ahead, but we've put lots of miles on their legs," said Powell.

"We're going to come back tomorrow with two set guys, put some more miles on their legs and stretch out that lead as much as possible. Any lead is a good lead on this pitch." by 48 runs.

Target stores can order your items online if they’re out of stock

The retail chain has been testing the feature since the spring, and expects it to be in wide use in time for holiday shopping. Is this always going to be a huge time saver? Probably not. However, it may give you a bit of a break if you’re exasperated and just want to know that sweater you were looking for is on its way to your home.

There are some subtler upgrades that have rolled out recently. There’s a “more intuitive” self-checkout system and in-store WiFi with twice the bandwidth. Also, store IT systems now use “bots” that automatically fix some problems. Staff can focus more on helping you and less on fighting their equipment, at least in theory. None of these updates are big in an of themselves, but Target is clearly betting that multiple small tech improvements (plus its more substantial additions) will amount to a noticeable difference.

HTC U11+ & U11 Life Appear in Hands-On Video Ahead of Launch Event

It’s now 2 days until HTC officially announces their final 2017 devices, the flagship HTC U11+ (with a larger 6″ 18:9 LCD display and key improvements over the regular U11) and the mid-range HTC U11 Life (an Android One device with a Snapdragon 630 SoC many U11 features at a cheaper price point). As we approach launch day, the rumor mill starts turning faster and faster. Both the HTC U11+ and the U11 Life have been leaked in full during the past few days, so we already know what to expect from HTC’s launch event. This time around, though, both devices have appeared in a full hands-on video before their release.

A German-language news outlet called Blick has managed to get a hold of the HTC U11+ and HTC U11 Life, giving us a close look at what is going to be announced on Thursday.

HTC U11+: HTC Hops into the 18:9 Trend

HTC U11+ translucentThe star of the show will, obviously, be the HTC U11+, HTC’s latest flagship refresh which will be marketed as the superior alternative to the U11. The video confirms that the device will feature a 6″ QHD+ display with considerably reduced screen bezels as well as wireless charging capabilities, contextually aware Edge Sense, and a mammoth ~4000 mAh battery while keeping the water resistance rating. The phone also adds some extra software features like a rotary-dial like app shortcut reachability feature which can be accessed by long-pressing the frame.

The device will also come in a translucent version together with the regular color options. This translucent version, while it’s not completely transparent like JerryRigEverything’s clear back mods, does leave the wireless charging coil and other internal components visible from the back of the phone. The phone will be available in a 128 GB storage configuration, but it’s not clear yet whether we’ll find other storage configurations like on the U11.

There are also some visible improvements that are not directly referenced in the video, however. For example, the phone in the video sports the stock white Android Oreo notification shade with Sense UI icons and the Sense Home launcher features what looks like adaptive icons for Dialer, Messages, Camera, and Google Chrome. While the Android version is never directly shown during the video, these two things, together with the previous rumors that the device was launching with the newest version of Android, give us some fair confidence that the U11+ will indeed launch with Android 8.0 out of the box. And this would mean that users will be able to take advantage of other added benefits, like Project Treble for better update support.

HTC U11 Life: An Android One Mid-ranger with Some Flagship Features

HTC U11 Life Android OneThe black edition of the HTC U11 Life, the HTC U11’s upcoming mid-range little brother, is also depicted in the video. The first thing we notice is that the phone swaps the glass back found in the U11 and U11+ for a much more modest polycarbonate back, likely to keep costs low, and downsizes the U11’s 5.5-inch display for a 5.2″ panel. It does feature Edge Sense and other features found in the U11 and U11+, though.

However, the similarities end there. The main seen difference between both devices, aside from the external looks, is the radically different software. That’s because the U11 Life is a part of the Android One program, and as such, the phone runs stock Android (with some HTC additions like the camera app) instead of HTC’s own Sense UI skin. Previous rumors said that the phone would come in both Android One and retail editions, featuring stock Android 8.0 and Sense Android 7.1 respectively, so there’s no surprises here.

Pricing

Finally, the video also covers the pricing aspect for both devices. The HTC U11+ will retail in Switzerland at a hefty 849 Swiss Francs, which equals 851 dollars, while the HTC U11 Life will retail for a much more modest 349 Swiss Francs ($350). We can expect the HTC U11+ to retail for something like $699 or $749 in the United States given the typical pricing disparity. The U11 Life’s $350 price tag, however, is something we can expect for the US as well, given that its direct competitor, the Moto X4, is available for $399.

It is not clear yet whether this was an intentional leak or the site accidentally broke embargo on the pre-recorded video, since the video was taken down shortly after being published on Blick‘s official Facebook page and there’s currently nothing regarding both devices on their website. But if you would like to have a look at the video yourself, you can have a look at a video mirror here. Both of these phones will be officially announced this Thursday, so be sure to stay tuned to XDA to know more about the U11+ and the U11 Life as soon as they are announced.

Waiting in Line for iPhone X? Check Out These Tips

With iPhone X delivery estimates now at five to six weeks for all carriers, colors, and capacities, customers who want an iPhone X but didn’t pre-order will need to wait until well into December to get their hands on one of the new devices.

There’s still one way to get an iPhone X on launch day – waiting in line. Apple says there will be iPhone X models available for walk-in purchases, but if pre-orders are any indication, supplies are going to be tight. Stores are opening starting at 8:00 a.m. local time for iPhone X sales.

If you’re planning to try for an iPhone X this Friday, make sure to check out these tips to maximize your chances of success.

Pick Your Store

Strategically choosing where you’re going to wait in line for an iPhone X is the most important part of the process. If you’re in a more remote area without a lot of options this isn’t up for debate, but in urban areas where there are a range of Apple Stores, carrier stores, and big box retailers to choose from, it takes a little more thought.

Apple Stores are going to have the most available iPhone X stock, but will also have more people waiting in line than carrier stores or major retailers. In the United States, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile stores will have the iPhone X available for purchase, as will Target and Best Buy locations.

The Palo Alto Apple Store

If you’ve waited in line for an iPhone before, you probably have insight into some of the better locations. In the Bay Area, for example, we have dozens of stores to choose from, but Palo Alto and San Francisco tend to get the most stock. Flagship stores like San Francisco are often well stocked, but draw a lot of customers, while indoor locations like Valley Fair are popular. Smaller Apple Stores like Oakridge and Los Gatos are often more overlooked, and I’ve picked up several launch day items at the former.

These examples are limited to my area, but the same thing goes for every location. Think about how populated an area is, what the waiting conditions are like, and how many iPhones are likely to be available to try to find the best spot. There are hidden gems out there.

If you haven’t waited in line before, ask around for suggestions. The MacRumors forums are a good resource to get tips and chat with others who are going to be waiting in line.

Apple Store employees aren’t going to give out details on the amount of stock that will be available, but sometimes you can get lucky with a third-party retailer, so if you’re going to choose a carrier or a big box store, it’s worth calling ahead just to check.

If the location you’re planning to visit is at an indoor mall, make sure to check the mall policies. Some malls won’t open up overnight and will be closed until the early morning hours.

Go Early

Once you’ve decided on a location, the best advice I can give is go early. iPhone X pre-orders sold out in minutes, so it definitely looks like stock is low. The last thing you want to do is line up at 4:00 a.m. and wait for hours just to not get a new device.

If you can manage it, this is one of those launches where going the night before or even earlier is going to give you the best chance of getting an iPhone X.

An iPhone 7 line on the Wednesday before launch, via Olaenglund

Again, though, this is going to depend on location. Starting the morning before the iPhone X launch, go scout your target store. Drive by to see if there are people waiting outside. It’s best to do this a few times during the day, if possible. Once you see a line start forming, that should give you an indication of when you need to be there.

For some launches, I’ve gone early in the morning and been okay, but for others, I’ve waited overnight and still not gotten a device. It’s better to wait a few additional hours and get a spot closer to the front of the line.

Bring a Friend

Waiting in line is better with a friend because if you need to step out of the line to use the restroom or grab a bite to eat, there’s someone to hold your place. It also gives you someone to chat and commiserate with as you stand outside for hours on end. MacRumors readers often plan iPhone launch day meet ups on the forums, and that can be a good way to find someone to wait in line with.

Bring Supplies

If you’re going to be waiting for several hours or camping out overnight, supplies are essential. You’re going to want a comfortable chair to sit in first and foremost, so bring something that’s portable but not uncomfortable, like a beach chair.

Dressing for the weather is important, so check the forecast. Dress warmly in layers so you’re prepared for the cold overnight or in the early morning. A jacket, warm boots, gloves, and a scarf will make standing in the cold more bearable if you’re waiting someplace chilly. If it’s going to rain, bring a raincoat and an umbrella.

Make sure you bring snacks and something to drink, along with entertainment. Charge your iPhone and iPad and bring a battery pack or two if you have them.

Some people bring tents to camp out overnight, but that’s a lot of equipment to deal with when it comes time to pack up. Still, if you’re waiting for more than 12 hours, it’s worth considering.

Apple employees will often provide drinks and snacks in the morning, but employees aren’t out overnight so you should bring your own supplies too.

You can’t bring a bathroom with you, so make sure you scout out the nearest bathroom locations.

Get to Know Your Line Buddies

When you’re waiting in line, make friends. Get to know the people you’re with, and get a feel for how many people are ahead of you. Lines will undoubtedly swell as it gets closer to the 8:00 a.m. launch time as people who have been saving spots have more people join them.

Line swelling can be super frustrating, so it’s worth being aware of ahead of time. Find out if the people around you are saving spots so there are no surprises. If you make line friends, you also have someone to save your spot if you need to step out of line.

Know What You Want

Before 8:00 a.m., store employees will likely come out, suss out the line, ask what color and capacity you want, and let you know if there’s enough available supply to fill demand. Make sure you know what you want and what your backup plan is so this process goes quickly and smoothly.

Make sure you’re an authorized user on your phone account if it’s a shared plan, and have your payment method planned out and ready. You don’t want to run into any hiccups with ordering after waiting in line.

This is also about the time that you should start packing up your supplies and getting ready to head into the store to make a purchase. Most stores will let customers in a few at a time, but from here, the checkout and purchase process should go smoothly.

You won’t have to pay to win in ‘Battlefront II’ after all

Essentially, what the development team has done is removed a good deal of the “pay to win” criticisms lobbed at it by making sure you can’t access stuff like Epic Star Cards (high value power-ups) from crates. “To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe and starter packs,” a blog post reads.

More than that, if you want a new weapon for a specific class, you’ll have to play as that class to unlock it — not just buy a bunch of crates and hope for the best. Same goes for class-specific gear.

Oh and you’ll need to hit a certain rank before you can start crafting upgraded Star Cards, too. “You won’t be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards,” the post says. “You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.”

This is all well and good, and should keep things on an even keel in terms of balance. You won’t just be able to drop a bunch of cash on crates and start dominating new players who would rather progress without spending money beyond the game itself. Will EA admit that its decision to shutter Visceral Games was a bad idea and cancel pivot Amy Hennig’s Star Wars game back to its original pitch too? Unfortunately, that’s probably not going to happen regardless of how much digital ink is spilled.

Star Wars: Battlefront II will be released November 17th on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.

Kevin Rose launches free rapid meditation app Oak

If it’s tough to find even five minutes of quiet in your busy day, Oak could be the meditation app for you. Launched today by Digg founder and True Ventures partner Kevin Rose, the free Oak app offers quick and simple breathing exercises as well as longer guided and DIY meditations. While apps like Headspace, Simple Habit and Calm focus on selling a wide array of themed meditations, Oak’s minimalist approach delivers tranquility. Isn’t that the point, after all?

“Some people just don’t have time some days to do the meditations,” Rose tells me. “But I always find the time, maybe in the back of an Uber, to crank out a breathing exercise.”

Rose could probably use some peace after a tumultuous few years. Rose sold Digg to Betaworks back in 2012, then started and sold to GV (Google Ventures) an app studio called Milk. He launched another app maker called North, and, after shutting down its thumbnail photo-sharing app Tiny, built a wristwatch enthusiasts app called Watchville. That ended up merging with top watch blog Hodinkee, where Rose became the CEO in 2015.

Rose eventually left to build an app for fasting called Zero, which has now assisted with 1.8 million fasts, then moved back to California to join True Ventures as an investment partner. But he wanted to stay close to his roots in building products. Now all his passions are coming together in Oak: Digg for occupying attention, app studios that require clarity of vision, the calm precision of wristwatches and the health opportunities of dieting.

“It all comes down to the way I was feeling a few years ago when Digg kinda blew up. I had a lot of anxiety. I just felt as though I’d been running so hard in the startup environment for so long that my brain needed a reset,” Rose says. “I wasn’t finding the time to be here, I was always in my head, not really finding time for myself and finding that proper balance. That’s when I started to get into meditation.”

Oak creator Kevin Rose

Oak makes it easy to dive into the world of mindfulness. Its intro video explains the benefits of clearing your mind, and how to gently pull yourself back from distractions so you can concentrate on your breath. Then rather than having to pay upfront or choose between dozens of different meditation themes, you just pick a background soundscape and start listening. I found the female instructor’s voice to be one of the more soothing across the range of meditation apps out there.

The goal of Oak isn’t to get you addicted to premium guided meditations, but instead teach you to guide yourself and eventually use it as a timer rather than a drill sergeant. “There are great meditation apps out there that charge for their content and I just don’t want to go down that same path,” says Rose.

“I’m committed to spending the money myself. And if it turns into something massive that needs more support, we might monetize” in a more pay-what-you want style rather than with standard subscriptions or in-app purchases. One other option Rose fancies is working with the APIs of wearables like the Oura ring to bring automated breath tracking into the app, which Oak could potentially charge for.

Freed from pushing you to pay for content, Oak lets you jump into its short-form breathing exercises that include visual cues. You can breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 and exhale for 8 to reach deep calm; use a 4-4-4-4 method for heightened performance like Navy Seals; or try a lively 6-2 to wake yourself up. I found these exercises much more approachable than immediately trying to sit still for 10 minutes.

Rose hasn’t always stuck by the apps he’s built, and that’s why he launched Oak today with little fanfare beyond a Medium post. But he was willing to talk because he’s passionate about building a “geeky” app that pulls people stuck on their phones and computers into the world of meditation. As the notifications and messages overrun our lives, we need meditation to morph from a luxury into something anyone can experience.

Google’s Fast Pair feature starts arriving on non-Pixel Android phones

In the avalanche of news that was Google’s Pixel 2 event last month, the company kind of glossed over the Fast Pair feature. Understandably so — it had a lot to get through at the event. And besides, it was far from the coolest thing about the company’s new Pixel Buds headphones (that title goes to the Babelfish-esque real-time translation feature).

The feature is similar to what Apple offers up with its W2 chip, offering instant, hassle-free Bluetooth pairing with a couple of taps. Of course, Fast Pair has one key advantage: much greater compatibility. Launched as a Google Pixel exclusive, the feature is starting to roll out to all Android devices running Google Play services 11.7 and greater (requiring Android 6.0 and up, mind).

Apple’s version was a centerpiece of Apple’s AirPods (along with subsequent Beats releases), and Google’s take will certainly benefit from wider availability. In addition to working across Android manufacturers, Fast Pair is also compatible with bluetooth headphones from a variety of different companies. Pixel Buds and Libratone’s solid Q Adapt were the first to be announced, and Google is adding the Plantronics Voyager 8200 headset to the list soon.

The selection is still pretty limited, with Google working with specific early partners to help develop Fast Pair . Though, along with opening it up to a lot more handsets, the company is putting out the call to “Bluetooth accessory” makers in its public forum — a move that indicates the company’s plans to bring Fast Pair to a lot more than just headphones and headsets.

The Pixel Buds were created internally to brace the consumer base for the company’s decision to drop the headphone jack from its new handsets. Opening Fast Pairing up to a much larger ecosystem of compatible devices should cushion the blow even more — and could open more handset manufacturers up to the possibility of dropping the jack themselves.

iPhone X Won’t Be Available to Walk-In Customers at Apple Stores in Belgium or France on Launch Day

Apple recently confirmed that the iPhone X will be available for walk-in customers to purchase at its retail stores when the device launches Friday, November 3, but that will not be the case in two European countries.

Due to anti-terrorism restrictions, Apple will not be selling the iPhone X to customers without a pre-order or pickup reservation in Belgium or France. The news was first reported by the Dutch-language blog One More Thing, and MacRumors has since received confirmation from a reliable source who asked not to be identified.

As best as we’re aware, Apple is simply complying with local laws and regulations discouraging large gatherings and queues in popular tourist areas, due to recent terrorist attacks in cities with Apple retail stores like Brussels and Paris.

Belgian and French customers can still pre-order the iPhone X on Apple’s website for in-store pickup or delivery, although shipping estimates have slipped to 5-6 weeks in both countries. Also, in Belgium at least, Apple will begin accepting reservations for in-store pickup on November 4 at 6:00 a.m. local time.

Apple releases iOS 11.1 with shiny new emojis

New emojis. Do you need to hear anything else? Apple just released an iOS update. iOS 11.1 is the first feature update for iOS 11. It adds a couple of new things, starting with dozens of new emojis.

Apple already previewed some of the new emojis, but they are now available to everyone. It includes mythical creatures, such as wizards, fairies, mermaids and vampires. There are some new activities, such as rock climbing and curling.

You’ll also find new clothing elements just in time for the winter, such as gloves, scarf and trench coat. There are a handful of new animals and some new facial expressions. Exploding head might be my favorite one.

Overall, Apple promises 70 new emojis, which makes iOS compatible with Unicode 10.0. A couple of emojis have also been redesigned, such as the bee one.

As always, each emoji character comes in many variations with multiple genders and skin colors when it’s not an animal or an object. And for the first time, some characters are gender neutral.

This update alone is a great way to foster adoption rate. Many people install new iOS updates so that they can see and send new emojis. You don’t want to be left behind when it comes to emojis.

In other news, Apple is bringing back a tiny feature that many people probably don’t use. You can force-press on the left edge of the screen to dim the current app and launch the app switcher again. The company has also added a new gesture. If you force-press on the left edge and swipe, you’ll go straight to the next app. This gesture is much more efficient than double-pressing on the home button.

Finally, iOS 11 comes with a bunch of bug fixes and security updates. In particular, it fixes the KRACK vulnerability. If you’re already running iOS 11, you should update right away as this version should work better than the previous one. Maybe it’ll improve your battery life.

Don’t forget to backup your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes before updating. Then head over to the Settings app, tap General and Software Update.

Highly Critical Flaw (CVSS Score 10) Lets Hackers Hijack Oracle Identity Manager

A highly critical vulnerability has been discovered in Oracle’s enterprise identity management system that can be easily exploited by remote, unauthenticated attackers to take full control over the affected systems.

The critical vulnerability tracked as CVE-2017-10151, has been assigned the highest CVSS score of 10 and is easy to exploit without any user interaction, Oracle said in its advisory published Monday without revealing many details about the issue.

The vulnerability affects Oracle Identity Manager (OIM) component of Oracle Fusion Middleware—an enterprise identity management system that automatically manages users’ access privileges within enterprises.

The security loophole is due to a “default account” that an unauthenticated attacker over the same network can access via HTTP to compromise Oracle Identity Manager.

Oracle has not released complete details of the vulnerability in an effort to prevent exploitation in the wild, but here the “default account” could be a secret account with hard-coded or no password.

“This vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e., may be exploited over a network without requiring user credentials,” Oracle’s advisory reads.

The easily exploitable vulnerability affects Oracle Identity Manager versions 11.1.1.7, 11.1.1.9, 11.1.2.1.0, 11.1.2.2.0, 11.1.2.3.0 and 12.2.1.3.0.

Oracle has released patches for all versions of its affected products, so you are advised to install the patches before hackers get a chance to exploit the vulnerability to target your enterprise.

“Due to the severity of this vulnerability, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply the updates provided by this Security Alert without delay,” the company warned.

Product releases that are not under Premier Support or Extended Support are not tested for the presence of the vulnerability.

However, Oracle said it was “likely that earlier versions of affected releases are also affected by these vulnerabilities. As a result, Oracle recommends that customers upgrade to supported versions.”

The security patch for this vulnerability comes just about two weeks after Oracle’s regular Critical Patch Update (CPU) for October 2017, which patches a total of 252 vulnerabilities in its products, including 40 in Fusion Middleware out of which 26 are remotely exploitable without authentication.

Fast Pair Enables Quick Bluetooth Pairing with Compatible Devices

Some like to point at how long it takes for major versions of Android to roll out as a fragmentation issue. While that is definitely something that needs to be worked on, a lot of new features can come from Google Play Services updates. These new updates are rolled out via the Play Store and quickly reach the majority of active devices on the market. Today, Google has announced a new Google Play Services feature called Fast Pair that will be added to Android 6.0+ devices running version 11.7 or higher of Google Play Services.

Bluetooth pairing can be a hassle for some people but thankfully it doesn’t need to be done frequently. Still, opening up that new pair of headphones or needing to switch from one device to another can be much more inconvenient than just plugging in a 3.5mm headphone jack. To make this process faster and easier, Google has just announced the Fast Pair feature that enables discovery and pairing of compatible devices with ease for those running Android 6.0+ with the latest version of Google Play Services.

Fast Pair

I say compatible devices because this feature is currently only possible with the Google Pixel Buds or Libratone’s Q Adapt On-Ear headphones at this time. Soon, you’ll also be able to achieve this with the Plantronics Voyager 8200 series wireless headsets though but as we can see the device selection is rather limited. Fast Pair uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to advertise and discover compatible devices and then pairs them the traditional way.

The compatible headset needs to be in close proximity to the smartphone or tablet you wish to pair it with. Then you’ll receive a Nearby notification as shown in the image above. Simply tap on that notification and you’ll see that transition to a pairing notification which will then go away once it has been paired successfully.

Rylo’s 360-degree camera lets you decide what shots you want later

Rylo has two 208-degree wide-angle lenses that capture your entire surroundings in 4K resolution. Its stabilization technology even allows you to carry the camera while shooting and still get a smooth image. To edit your video, plug it into your iPhone and use the companion app to easily find what frames you want to include in your HD video or alternatively, download the whole thing for a fully immersive 360-degree viewing experience. You can then easily post your videos on Instagram, Facebook or share them directly with others.

What is probably Rylo’s main attraction, however, is the freedom it allows users when it comes to shooting and editing video. Since it captures everything, users don’t have to worry about focusing on anything in particular while using the camera. Instead, Rylo’s software lets you figure that out later. You can simply swivel the view around until you find the direction you want included in your final video, but you can also pick points of interest that the camera will then automatically follow. For example, the Rylo cofounders showed the Verge that a video taken from the roof of a car while it drove across the Golden Gate Bridge could be directed to focus on one of the bridge’s arches. After setting it as a point of interest, the resulting video then smoothly tracked it as the car drove up to, underneath and past it.

Rylo is designed by engineers that worked on Apple’s cameras as well as the Instagram app Hyperlapse. The camera is available now and priced at $499, right in between the GoPro Fusion and Insta360, which are $700 and $300, respectively. As of now, it’s only available for iPhone, but an Android version of the app is in the works.

Alas, Astropad’s ‘Camera Button’ was too cool for Apple

Astropad’s forthcoming Luna display adapter and software turns your iPad into a wireless, essentially lag-free monitor for your Mac – and the company wanted to make it even cooler by including a clever hack that turned the iPad’s mostly useless front-facing camera into a software button. But, unsurprisingly, Apple has nixed the feature by rejecting the update which included the functionality from the App Store.

The Camera Button was rejected based on section 2.5.9 of the App Store’s review guidelines, which states that apps which alter the behavior of native hardware or software elements will be rejected. It’s amorphous enough that it could definitely apply if Apple feels inclined, which in this case it obviously does.

Still, it’s a bummer, because developers pushing the boundaries of Apple’s available APIs and developer tools is what makes apps, and iOS in general, better. This also looked like a great way to take a tricky UI problem and turn it into an innovative solution.

Astropad’s Luna Display was great before the Camera Button ever came along, however, and it’ll remain great after its gone – still, you gotta feel for the little guy in this scenario.

Google Issue Tracker Exploit Allowed the Viewing of Unpatched Vulnerabilities

Google recently launched a new Issue Tracker and with all new pieces of software, there are bound to be various bugs that may not have been brought to the attention of the developers. Recently, a security researcher named Alex Birsan started noticing his vulnerability reports were being handled by opening a thread within the platform. Inciting his curiosity, the researcher started trying to “break it” and what resulted was a bug that allowed someone to view a full list of known, unpatched vulnerabilities within Google.

Many of us are familiar with Android’s monthly security updates as we talk about them each and every month. But some people may not realize the process that goes into this entire cycle. What generally happens is the security researcher finds the vulnerability, contacts Google about it and then has it verified through the Android bounty program. The two parties agree to time frame as to when they can go public with it and by then Google is generally able to get the patches to 3rd-party OEMs a month before they begin updating their Nexus and Pixel devices.

This means that at any given time the Google Issue Tracker has a list of vulnerabilities that are unpatched and that can be quite dangerous in the hands of the wrong person. This doesn’t only happen with Android devices either since Google uses this Issue Tracker for all of its services. Mr. Birsan found three vulnerabilities within the Google Issue Tracker with the largest of the three allowing them to see a full list of known, unpatched vulnerabilities within Google.

Thankfully Mr. Birsan contacted Google about these vulnerabilities and Google was very quick to respond and fix them (within hours). The company says that so far, there hasn’t been any evidence discovered that would lead them to believe someone else found the bugs and exploited them. For those who are more interested in the details, you’ll definitely want to read through his experience on his recent Medium article.

Android 8.1 Lets Users Restore Data After Initial Device Setup

In Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google added the option to backup app data, device settings, call history and SMS messages to Google Drive, thus significantly removing one of the major pain points which had existed in Android for years. To restore app data, users had been relying on solutions which required root such as Titanium Backup. To restore call history and SMS messages, users had to rely on different apps as well, and so on. The feature addition in Marshmallow was a much-needed move, as it increased convenience for users and allowed them to change devices without having to lose their data or go out of their way to restore it.

However, the problem with restoring data until now was that the option to restore data was only present during the initial device setup. Once users had setup their devices, they could not restore their data from the cloud. If they skipped the option during the setup, they were out of luck if they wanted to restore the backed up data at a later point in time. The only option, in this case, would be to factory reset the device again. Some users even had their restoration process halt or fail, leaving them unable to get their backed data on the device even if they chose to restore it from Google Drive.

Android 8.1 Oreo rectifies this by adding an option to finish restoring data even after the initial device setup has completed. The new option is visible as a banner in the ‘Suggestions’ section of the Android Settings app. Once users tap on the option, they are presented with the choice to either restore from the web (cloud storage), or to restore data from an iPhone.

Android 8.1 Restore Data Android 8.1 Restore Data from Backup Android 8.1 Restore Data from Backup

When they choose “backup from the cloud” option, their backed up data is visible and users can choose which portions to restore from app data, device settings, call history, SMS messages, etc. Users can then choose to restore any specific portion or to restore everything from the backup.

Our take on this is that the new option polishes Google’s backup and restore capabilities. At one time, stock Android’s capabilities were lacking here, as custom OEM ROMs such as MIUI already have a full device backup and restore tool, which can be used anytime, not just during the initial device setup. Now, Google has caught up in this regard. This new capability will be part of the stable version of Android 8.1 Oreo, which will be released in December.

Spotlight on Ashish Nehra, India look to turn tables in T20s vs NZ

Ashish Nehra running into bowl one last time at a place where it all began will form the sub plot as India aim to better their abysmal T20 record against New Zealand in the three-match series starting here tomorrow.

The opening match at the Feroz Shah Kotla will be Nehra's last game in competitive cricket and India would look to bid a befitting farewell to the seamer, whose career has been characterised by many injuries and many comebacks.

It is appropriate that the 38-year-old will be hanging up his boots in front of his home crowd and nothing would be sweeter than an Indian win against a team that has been their Achilles heel in this format. India have so far lost all their matches against New Zealand, the fifth and last one coming at the ICC World T20 in 2016.

For a team that has stormed its way to the top of world cricket with wins over Australia, England and Sri Lanka, among others, this piece of statistic certainly sticks out like a sore thumb. That aside, India have been on a roll.

With series wins over big teams like Australia, India have firmly stamped their supremacy in the limited-overs format.

Having emerged a 2-1 winner in a keenly-contested preceding One-day International series against the same
opponents, India's confidence is high and they would look to continue the good work in this slam-bang format.

With a strong all-round and in-form team at their disposal, India will fancy their chances of improving their record against the Kiwis.

Fresh from his fluent century in the series-deciding third and final ODI, which made him the fastest to complete 9000 runs, skipper Virat Kohli will be eyeing yet another series victory. He looked in great touch alongside Rohit Sharma, the game's other centurion, and the two batting stalwarts would eye an encore.

Besides the vice-captain and the captain, Shikhar Dhawan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has a better record against the Kiwis among Indian players, will look to shoulder the batting responsibility.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya adds to the team's strength and the New Zealanders would be wary of him.

In bowling, India will look to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah for breakthroughs with the new ball as well as in the death overs.

With his match-turning effort on Sunday, Bumrah showed why he is considered the best death bowler in the world.

Though he went for 92 in his 10-over spell in Kanpur, Bhuvneshwar has normally been a bowler captain Kohli could turn to.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will be high on confidence after his crucial two-wicket burst at Green Park and he is again going to be the key spinner. Kuldeep Yadav is the other spinner, who could figure in the playing XI. Then there is Nehra, who will bring to an end 18 years of international cricket journey, and he must be hoping for that perfect ending.

Against the likes of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, it will take some doing.

Teams (from):
India: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Ashish Nehra (only for first game), Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, KL Rahul

New Zealand: Kane Williamson(capt), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Tom Bruce, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.

Match starts at 7 pm IST.

Google is Adding AAC Bluetooth Audio Codec for All Devices in AOSP

Android has been criticized in the past for the way Bluetooth as a whole performs on Google’s mobile platform. Some people have issues getting Bluetooth devices to connect properly, others have come across audio playback skipping and there’s also been complaints about the audio quality itself. With the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL dropping the 3.5mm headphone jack it seems Google is doing more work to improve the Bluetooth audio experience and we’ve just noticed they are adding the AAC Bluetooth audio codec for all devices via AOSP.

Just this month, we’ve seen two big changes happening to Bluetooth on the Android OS platform that many have been asking about for years. We first shared some commits that we had uncovered that show you will soon be able to initiate a conversation with the Google Assistant and end it entirely with your voice on devices with the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP).  Sadly, some have also experienced audio skipping during Bluetooth playback when the device is under high load. To relieve this issue, Google is working to grant real-time CPU scheduling of the Bluetooth audio playback.

These two changes go a long way to improving the Bluetooth audio experience on Android but Google’s work doesn’t seem to be stopping there. Some new commits merged to AOSP show that Google is adding the AAC Bluetooth audio codec to all devices. Granted, this doesn’t mean that it will show up on every device running a new version of Android, but it should help make the decision to implement it easier on the OEM.

For example, the OnePlus 5 only has the option to choose between aptX, aptX HD, and SBC. Then, when we look at the Pixel phones from Google (both first and 2nd generation running Android 8.0 Oreo), we can see that we can choose between SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC Bluetooth audio codecs.

Unroll.Me brings its email management app to Android

Android users will now be able to battle junk mail and manage their email subscriptions using the new Android app from Unroll.Me.

To be clear, anyone with a smartphone could get the benefits of the service already. You just had to connect you email account, then use Unroll.Me’s features to unsubscribe to the emails you didn’t want and roll-up the rest into a single daily digest.

However, CEO Jojo Hedaya sounds particularly proud of his team’s app interface — first released on iOS and now on Android. The idea is to turn managing your subscriptions into a fun, Tinder-style interaction, where you swipe left to unsubscribe, swipe up to add a newsletter to your daily Rollup and swipe right to just keep it in your inbox.

“I’m very confident this is the best way to remove clutter from your inbox,” Hedaya said.

Do most people really have enough subscriptions for to do much swiping? Well, Unroll.Me says the average user has more than 62 subscriptions on signup. And aside from the swiping, the app also allows you to manage a list of all your subscriptions and read your Rollup.

Unroll.me unsubscribe

While you can get a lot done in the app, Hedaya emphasized that he’s not trying to replace a traditional email client.

“In my opinion, past [attempts] to solve the email client game went 75 percent of the way there,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that we had a separate solution that just helps you with email clutter.”

Like Unroll.Me’s other services, the Android app is available for free — the company is owned by Rakuten/Slice and makes its money from user data. (That got Unroll.Me into hot water earlier this year, and as a response, Hedaya has vowed to be more transparent.)

T-Mobile & Sprint Merger Efforts Have Been Reportedly Dropped

A few months back, we reported that T-Mobile and Sprint were in talks for a potential merger, months after a previous attempt. Previously, problems relating to the US Department of Justice may have posed a problem to the telecom giants in America, but doubts about the Trump administration’s views meant that the merge may have been able to go ahead. Now it seems that the potential merger has been dropped entirely, largely due to how much control of the Sprint telecom SoftBank would have to give to Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile. SoftBank’s chairman and founder, Masayoshi Son, allegedly is afraid of giving up too much control of the company. Not only that, it seems that the two firms struggled to come to an agreement on the valuation of Sprint’s shares. Talks may still be revived at any time, but for now, sources close to the companies claim talks have been dropped.

The previously mentioned reaction of the stock market towards Sprint’s shares may also come into consideration. Sprint’s shares have dropped for months, along with the profitability of the firm. The company has been hemorrhaging money for several years now, and that coupled with its dropping share prices means that the companies cannot agree on a valuation of Sprint’s shares. People close to Sprint claim that the company now wishes to invest money into its services. T-Mobile’s shares have dropped recently too, as a result of this potential union being allegedly dropped. However the company has been in a much stronger position than its prospective merger in recent years.

We’ll see if talks pick up again between the companies, but for now, it seems the deal is off. This is a good thing for those who may have been afraid of a stronger oligopoly in the American telecoms market, so we’ll see what happens next.

Nintendo Says Super Mario Run Has Yet to Reach ‘Acceptable Profit Point’ Nearly One Year After Launch

Nintendo yesterday held its quarterly earnings report [PDF], launching off with details of its “Smart-Device Business” and telling investors how things have been going for Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes, while detailing the upcoming launch of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Although Fire Emblem Heroes is on track to meet the company’s “overall profit objectives,” Super Mario Run appears to be a disappointment in the iOS App Store for Nintendo, which stated it has “not yet reached an acceptable profit point” for the game (via The Verge).

The difference between the two apps lies in their payment structure, with Fire Emblem Heroes a free-to-download title with micro-transactions, and Super Mario Run priced at a fixed $9.99. The company noted that Super Mario Run has now hit the 200 million download mark, and Nintendo was even able to launch the app in countries “not previously reached by our dedicated video game platform business.”

Unfortunately, after about 10 months on mobile devices Super Mario Run still has not made the amount of money that Nintendo predicted for the title, which was its first foray into a mobile app built around one-time payments. Still, the company said that it has “learned a lot in terms of game development and deployment,” which it plans to “take advantage of moving forward.”

Although we have not yet reached an acceptable profit point, we have learned a lot in terms of game development and deployment that we want to take advantage of moving forward.

For Fire Emblem Heroes, Nintendo said that it “listened to the voices of our consumers,” leading to continual updates to the app since its launch in February. This game is on track to meet Nintendo’s business and profit objectives, and new in-game events will be added soon, as well as Traditional Chinese text. The game will then expand to five more countries and regions: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Thailand, and Singapore.

Nintendo’s newest iOS game Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will follow in the footsteps of Fire Emblem Heroes, bringing in-app purchases to the free-to-download game in the form of Leaf Tickets. For the mobile version of Animal Crossing, Nintendo said that “our objective is to offer a service that allows even consumers who do not normally play games on a regular basis to have a little fun each and every day.”

Nintendo’s first iPhone game, Miitomo, also uses a free-to-download payment structure with in-app purchases, but the company made no mention of that game in its newest earnings report.

Earlier in the year, a senior official at Nintendo reportedly told Nikkei that the company prefers the pay-once strategy of Super Mario Run, and called the freemium aspects of Fire Emblem Heroes an “outlier” in the grand scheme of its mobile gaming plan. Even then, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima — who presented this week’s earnings report — admitted that Super Mario Run “did not meet” the company’s revenue expectations.

To entice old players to return and new players to download, Nintendo updated Super Mario Run in September with a new mode, new characters, and a 50 percent price drop. Nintendo’s earnings report charts are vague, but the company noted an uptick in weekly users thanks to this September update. Prior to that, its weekly users had been dropping precipitously since April.

Ultimately, Nintendo still aims for Super Mario Run to be the “definitive Mario application for smart devices,” so players can likely expect ongoing updates to the app in the future.

The Upcoming HTC U11 Life Leaks in Full, Courtesy of T-Mobile

HTC is now preparing for an event on Thursday, where they’ll announce new additions to the HTC U lineup. The star of the show will allegedly be the HTC U11+, which is pretty much a revision of the critically acclaimed HTC U11, swapping the 5.5″ 16:9 display for a bigger 6″ display with a beefier battery to match. But we’re also getting a midrange device: the HTC U11 Life, which will allegedly also be sold as an Android One device. T-Mobile has now told us all we need to know about the HTC U11 Life, which has accidentally popped up on their support website.

The T-Mobile support website pretty much confirms most of the rumors we’ve heard until now. We’re getting a Snapdragon 630 processor, which should provide plenty of horsepower for the average customer, coupled with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage with microSD expansion. Specwise, it’s identical to the Motorola Moto X4 (which also offers its own Android One flavor). However, similarities mostly end there.

While the Moto X4 features dual cameras on the back, the U11 Life has 16 MP sensors (single) on both the back and the front. A 3,000 mAh battery powers Motorola’s midrange device, while the HTC equivalent downgrades to a smaller – and rather lackluster – 2,600 mAh battery. However, there are some discrepancies with the rumored specs, mainly in the software. The phone, which is rumored to come with a clean stock build of Android 8.0 (as a part of the Android One program), seems to be instead powered by the same software as the U11: Android 7.1.1 with the Sense UI skin, as well as Amazon Alexa and Sense Companion as add-on voice assistants.

Now, this does not mean that’s the software that is going to run on all U11 Life devices. As it was the case with the Moto X4, we’ll could be seeing both a retail model with the stock software sold at retailers and carriers and an Android One model with the Google-supervised software sold exclusively through the Google Store/Project Fi. But, this does mean that those getting the retail model will be dealing with an arguably inferior software experience, as well as slower updates and very possibly a lower Android version (if the Android One model does come with Android Oreo after all) out of the box.

The support page was pulled just as quickly as it came online, but if you’d still like to have a look at it, you can check out an archived version here.

NVIDIA SHIELD Experience 6.1 Rolling Out with New Assistant Actions, IR Remote Controls, New YouTube TV App, and More

Roughly a month ago, NVIDIA began rolling out yet another major version update, the NVIDIA SHIELD Experience 6.0, to the NVIDIA Shield TV. While it didn’t bring a major Android version bump or any UI changes, it did bring with it two important improvements. First off, we got Google Assistant support, bringing the conversational voice assistant to NVIDIA’s Android TV-powered device. And we also received SmartThings support, which gives the Shield TV the ability to work as a SmartThings hub for your smart home, and allows you to control different (previously paired) smart components of your home, like your thermostat or your lights. NVIDIA is now rolling out yet another update, which further improves the previously introduced features while adding other enhancements.

With this SHIELD Experience 6.1 update, Google Assistant keeps getting smarter for US owners of the Shield TV. Now you can use your voice to navigate, open shows and control playback on Hulu, as well as ordering takeout food or Uber rides and shopping at Target, Costco, Walmart, and more. The update also adds support for TV on/off over IR for the SHIELD Remote, by tapping home + back, together with support for the recently launched YouTube TV app for Android TV devices.

The update also brings security patches, including a patch for the dreaded KRACK vulnerability, as well as some minor bug fixes, features and improvements. So, if you own an NVIDIA Shield TV, remember that, as we said in the beginning of the article, the update is now rolling out globally so be sure to check for an update coming soon to your device. If you own other Android TV devices, like a Sony Bravia TV set, then you’ll have to wait for news from your manufacturer if you’d like to get YouTube TV and other features on your TV set. As always, we’re looking forward to new updates for this device.

Eat fish during pregnancy to protect baby from asthma

Women who consume fish during pregnancy are just as likley to protect their offspring from developing asthma as those who consume fish oil supplements, suggests a new study.

Fish during pregnancy may protect baby from asthma

Pregnant women who consume high doses of omega-3 fatty acids in the third trimester may help protect their kids from developing breathing problems in their early childhood, according to the study.

"With almost equal to slightly higher cost, consuming 8-12 ounces (2-3 servings) of fish with low mercury levels a week not only may attain the same asthma protection, but also strengthen the nutritional benefits to infant growth and development," said Richard Lockey, Professor at the University of South Florida in the US.

The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, was conducted in three groups of women in their third trimester.

The first group consumed omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil daily while the second group took a placebo. The third group was named the "no oil" group who were allowed to consume either fish or fish oil supplements as per their choices.

The researchers found that the children in the fish oil and the "no oil" groups took less asthma medication as they aged to 24 years old, inferring both groups developed less asthma.

"Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be synthesised by humans and therefore are essential nutrients which are derived exclusively from marine sources," said iChen Hsing Lin from the University of South Florida.

New Zealand aims to extend perfect T20 record against India

Big-hitting batsman Colin Munro believes New Zealand's perfect Twenty20 record against India will inspire confidence as the Kiwis try to rebound from losing a one-day series. The Kiwis have won all five of the T20 matches they have played against India. Having never won a Test or one-day series in India, the T20 record is one they will be anxious to keep when a series starts Wednesday in New Delhi.

India were stretched in the three one-day internationals by Kane Williamson's side, but prevailed in a thrilling final contest Sunday to take the series 2-1. Munro, who top-scored for the Black Caps with a 62-ball 75 in the third clash, is hoping the team rediscovers its winning ways in New Delhi. "Everyone looks forward to T20. I think it's a lot of fun, we enjoy it and we have been lucky enough in the last couple of years to be successful in it," Munro said.

"We have a good record against India so we are looking forward to this one. Hopefully we can get off to a good start," the left-handed opener added. After two disappointing performances, Munro dazzled with the bat in his team's near-miss chase of 338 at Kanpur's Green Park on Sunday. But the 30-year-old batsman is wary of India's new-ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who was instrumental in blocking the visitors' run chase.

"The big challenge for me was just actually finding a good tempo to bat at. I'd like to say that I want to go and blast off in the first 10 overs but it's not always going to be the case, especially when you are playing against Bhuvi and Bumrah," said Munro. "They are probably two of the best opening bowlers in these conditions," he added.

Munro, who has been in and out of the limited-overs team since making his debut in 2012, said valuable advice from former captain Brendon McCullum lifted his confidence ahead of the series decider. "It is a funny one, actually, because after the second game I wouldn't say I was down but I hadn't got off to a start I wanted to while opening the batting, so I sent him a text message to ask him his thoughts and let him know what I was thinking," said Munro. "And again he came out and said, 'Mate, you know you got a good record in T20 and the way you play at the top of the order. If you can, try and implement that in the ODI game'."

"People rely on their phones so much these days. We created a smartphone that can power through when other devices need a pit stop," said Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer of HMD Global, in a statement.

Nokia 2 packs 4100mAh battery that offers two-day life, the company claimed.

The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset and features 5-inch LCD HD display with stock Android Nougat operating system (OS).

The OS will be upgraded to latest Android Oreo OS in the future, the company said.

The device houses 8MP rear camera with automatic scene detection and auto focus (AF) and 5MP selfie camera.

The smartphone has 1GB RAM and 8GB internal memory that can be expanded up to 128GB via a dedicated MicroSD card slot.

The ZTE Axon M Will be Available for Purchase from AT&T Starting November 1st

The announcement of the ZTE Axon M phone, has taken many people by surprise despite its frequent leaks and rumors. Instead of going for a conventional smartphone with top-of-the-line specs, as everyone is currently doing, ZTE is instead going for a more “experimental” approach with their 2017 Axon flagship. That’s why the Axon M, in true Nintendo DS fashion, features dual 5.2-inch LCD displays – one on the front and another one on the back – with a hinge that allows the phone to be folded like a book. The unusual (yet interesting) looking device is now right around the corner, and US customers might get a taste of the phone on AT&T as soon as Wednesday comes.

The ZTE Axon M will be available exclusively through AT&T in the United States, and customers will be able to order their device starting on November 1st, right after Halloween ends. You will be able to order it online through AT&T Next at 24.17$ a month during a 30-month device financing period, also giving away that the retail price for the device would be somewhere around $720. The device will also be available in stores starting on November 17, before the Christmas season kicks off.

It’s still unclear whether the device will be available on other carriers, or even as a GSM unlocked model, sooner or later. However, given AT&T previous track record with exclusive devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, we wouldn’t get our hopes too high. Also, AT&T devices are known to be bootloader locked, so if you’re the kind of person who’s into modding and rooting, then you’re probably going to have to import an unlocked model. Otherwise, if you want to take advantage of AT&T financing or you’re already using AT&T, you can order the phone from here starting Wednesday.

Essential Phone Receiving OTA That Fixes KRACK Vulnerability and Adds Fingerprint Gestures

Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone announcement received a ton of hype it’s easy to understand why. The man behind the company is considered “the father of Android”, so many looked forward to experiencing his vision of a perfect (or essential) Android phone and ecosystem. As it turns out, the new startup has come across a number of issues since its announcement but at least there’s some progress being made. The latest update to roll out to the Essential Phone patches the WPA2 KRACK vulnerability and it also adds fingerprint gestures as well.

One of the selling points of the Essential Phone was that it would be a pure Android experience. Therefore, we were to expect there wouldn’t be any additional bloatware installed and that there wouldn’t be an OEM ROM holding the phone back in terms of performance. Such barebones ROMs are great for those who love Stock Android, but the lack of features might turn some enthusiasts off as well should they be more used to something like OxygenOS.

Over time, we’ve seen the company roll out a number of OTA updates that have managed to improve various aspects of the device. The recent update which focused on camera quality likely stands out to most, since this was something that was really lacking in the past. As the team continues to work on Android, and the upcoming Oreo update, we’re likely to see more refinements added and that is what we’re seeing now with the latest OTA update being rolled out.

Those who are focused on security will be happy to see that this update (build NMJ20D) brings the highly anticipated patches that fix the WPA2 KRACK vulnerability. We’re also seeing that fingerprint gestures support has been added as a feature. It also fixes the resolution/touch scrolling issues that have been reported by multiple users. This is definitely an update that you’ll want to download and install immediately.

Let us know your thoughts on this update!

Countering dew: Kuldeep Yadav bowls with wet ball at nets

Anticipating that gripping the ball may prove to be a stiff challenge because of dew, Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav was today seen practising with the wet ball on the eve of the Twenty20 series-opener against New Zealand, here.

Dew has always been prevalent whenever Indian teams play at home from October to January. Any score becomes chase-able under lights during this time of the year as bowlers find it extremely difficult to grip the ball.

During the optional net session in the afternoon, Kuldeep was seen soaking the white cherry in mineral water after every second delivery.

The idea was conceived by bowling coach Bharat Arun, who was seen discussing the strategy with the Chinaman bowler.

India paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar had also adopted the same strategy to prepare himself for death bowling in the past.

Bowling with the wet ball will help Kuldeep learn to get more control as it turns into a slippery bar of soap after gripping. The wet ball also skids off the pitch making it easier for batsmen to score

For a wrist spinner, the grip becomes all the more important as there are more chances of wet ball slipping out of the hand.

Kuldeep primarily bowled to Dinesh Karthik at the nets but the batsman was seen negotiating the deliveries easily. In between, he asked scribes at what time in the evening dew factor sets in.

During the net session, rookie Shreyas Iyer was hit on the right forearm by a throw-down from support staff member Raghavendra.

Iyer looked in pain and did not take any further part in the nets after that.
