The Android version distribution statistics tell us what Android versions are in use in terms of overall percentage of users. This can be helpful for application developers looking to see if supporting a certain API level is worthwhile for them. Said distribution numbers are updated monthly. After releasing their monthly security bulletin, Google has now also published the Android distribution statistics reflecting data collected up to October. The latest numbers finally show Android Oreo in the distribution statistics, though it’s only at 0.2% right now.

Keep in mind that this data is collected from those devices visiting the Google Play Store during a 7-day period, so while it’s not totally accurate, it should give you a pretty good view of the current Android version distribution worldwide. This month’s statistics show that Android Nougat continues growing in popularity while most other Android versions are being used less frequently.

Though Nougat is trending upwards, the statistics do show that Android 6.0 Marshmallow remains in the lead at a comfortable 32% of all Android devices (down from 32.2% in September). This is followed closely by Lollipop 5.x and Nougat 7.x, which are both sitting at 27.7% and 17.8% respectively (Lollipop down from 28.8% and Nougat up from 15.8%.)

The big news here is that Android Oreo, which was released a little over a month ago, is running on 0.2% of all Android devices. This may sound insignificant, but considering that there are over 2 billion monthly active Android devices (according to Google), this means that Android Oreo may be running on at least 4 million devices worldwide which is quite a feat compared to previous Android releases.

Looking at the rest of the table, Android 2.3.x Gingerbread and Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich are tied at 0.6%, while Android 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 4.3.x (all comprised under the Jelly Bean codename) dropped from 6.9% to 6.6%. Android 4.4.x KitKat has dropped below the 15% mark, from 15.1% to 14.5% month-to-month. A summary of the version distribution changes can be read in the table below:

Android Version September 2017 October 2017
Android Gingerbread 0.6% 0.6%
Android Ice Cream Sandwich 0.6% 0.6%
Android Jelly Bean 6.9% 6.6%
Android KitKat 15.1% 14.5%
Android Lollipop 28.8% 27.7%
Android Marshmallow 32.2% 32.0%
Android Nougat 15.8% 17.8%
Android Oreo <0.1% 0.2%
