ESWAT: City Under Siege, cyberpunk action arrives to SEGA Forever
The Sega Genesis catalog is enough to keep anyone satisfied for a long time. Now it can be enjoyed from your tablet or smart phone, thanks to SEGA Forever, which has converted countless titles to the Android ecosystem. The latest addition to the lineup of classics is ESWAT: City Under Siege, a frantic action game which will make you a glutton for punishment.
ESWAT: City Under Siege arrived on the Genesis in 1990, at the height of Robocop’s popularity, although the title is based on the arcade game Cyber Police ESWAT. The two games may be similar in setting and characters, but it’s more than just a console port. It’s a full game in its own right, likely inspired by Judge Dredd, a masterpiece of cyberpunk. Criminals are ravaging Liberty City and it’s your job to don the uniform of police agent Duke Oda to stop them.
The gameplay clearly draws from Shinobi, although ESWAT: City Under Siege is more difficult than the famous ninja title. While most games in the genre move from left to right, this title has you moving in all directions to find the door to the next screen. It bucks the trend, giving the player incentive to explore. However, this won’t free you from the tough final boss fights, which will quickly deplete your life bar. It is a retro game, after all.
ESWAT: City Under Siege is a challenging game that really keeps you on your toes. Thankfully, you gain access to a combat suit with powerful weapons and a sweet jet pack. It has all the pros and cons of other SEGA Forever games that we’ve mentioned before (mediocre controls, game saves, going back in time 15 seconds), but the list of games keeps growing. Hopefully soon they’ll add the Saturn titles that they’ve been promising for a while now. In the meantime, enjoy these jewels of retro gaming from the classic SEGA console.
