Harris Shield: Dev's 156 stars in Lilavatibai Podar's massive 615-run win

Dev Mansukhani's unbeaten 156 off 92 balls helped Lilavatibai Podar High School (Santacruz) thrash their neighbours Podar International School (Santacruz) by a whopping 615 runs on the opening day of the U-16 Harris Shield tournament at Cross Maidan yesterday. In the knockout round encounter, Lilavatibai Podar batsmen toyed with the opposition bowling and scored 415-3 in 36 overs before the umpires decided to leave the field as the Podar International bowlers were unable to complete their allotted 45 overs in the stipulated three hours. Due to the slow over rate, Podar International conceded a penalty of 234 runs and received a massive revised target of 650. Chasing a huge total, Podar International were bowled out for 34 in just 10 overs. Opener Keyur Patel (17) was the only batsmen to reach double figures. For Lilavatibai Podar, left-arm spinner Tanay Puntambekar claimed five wickets while skipper Abbas Karachiwala took three.

Abbas leads from the front
Earlier, electing to bat, Abbas (83) and Vilohit Desai (22) laid the foundation with a 62-run opening stand. After Vilohit's departure, Dev joined his skipper and the duo stitched a 188-run partnership for the second wicket. Abbas (83) departed to off spinner Eish Bhangare. Eish also sent back Lilavatibai's second highest scorer, Tatsat Singh (91). Living up to his teammates' expectations, Dev, 14, smashed 19 fours and three sixes during his 92-ball stay at the crease. "The way he played was outstanding. He structured the innings and built partnerships. He is a very hard working player. He effected two stumpings as well," Lilavatibai Podar coach Ramesh Shejwal told mid-day.

Karan stars in Anjuman win
Meanwhile, in another match, left-arm spinner Karan Bhadra claimed six wickets to help Anjuman Islam High School (CST) beat Vibgyor High School (Malad) by 10 wickets. Put in to bat, Vibgyor were bowled out for 21. Karan returned with impressive figures of six for four runs in his four overs. Anjuman Islam openers Santosh Yadav (13*) and Mahinderpal Baavani (9*) took only two overs to chase down the target.

Jain brothers' feat in vain
Clinical batting performances from Ayush Singh (58), Atharva Kardile (54) and Aditya Pabalkar (40) coupled with a great bowling effort from Sidhant Kewat (2-6) helped Matunga Premier School win by a mammoth 121 runs against Cambridge High School ICSE (Kandivli) at Oval Maidan yesterday. Electing to bat, the Matunga unit lost their first three wickets with just 43 runs on the board. Aditya (40 off 52) and Ayush (58 off 61) steadied the ship with a 90-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Matunga ended with an impressive 266-9 in 44 overs. For Cambridge, Sanyam Jain (5-70) and his brother, skipper Soumil (2-40) were the pick of the bowlers.

Chasing 267, the Jain brothers stitched a 131-run opening stand. Despite Soumil (39) and Sanyam's (72) efforts, Cambridge were unable to reach their target and finished at 145-4 in 45 overs.

Balmohan beat St Xavier's
Meanwhile, Atharva Chavan (3-31) and Nisarg Bhuwad (2-10) helped last year's semi-finalists Balmohan Vidyamandir (Marathi) beat St Xavier's Boys Academy (Churchgate) by seven wickets. Electing to bat, the Churchgate outfit were bowled out for 75. In reply, Balmohan chased down their total in just 11.3 overs.

VPMS win by 10 wickets
Left-arm spinner Omkar Ambavkar (4-12) and off-spinner Pratik Shukla (3-39) spun VPMS Vidya Mandir (Dahisar) to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Parle Tilak Vidyalaya English, ICSE (Vile Parle).
