Report: Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7 to Launch in January

Samsung’s Galaxy S series and LG’s G series are usually the first two major flagships that we see launched each year. Samsung has a history of waiting until either March or April and LG follows right along with them. Sometimes LG is able to get ahead of Samsung and launch their device in South Korea first but there have been times when Samsung released their new flagship smartphone first. These usually come at the end of the 1st quarter or the start of the 2nd quarter, but a new report says both LG and Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S9 and the LG G7 in January of next year.

This new report comes from BusinessKorea which cites “the industry” and claims both LG and Samsung will be launching their new flagship smartphone in January instead of their typical release window.

We have previously talked about the upcoming Galaxy S9 in a previous article. The flagship smartphone is expected to use the model number SM-G960 and it is said to be launching with Android 8.0 Oreo on board. This is great news as it means Samsung will be required to add Treble support for the device. Inside the device, we’re hearing that it will be using the Snapdragon 845 SoC from Qualcomm, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and it will retain its QHD+ display at 1440×2960 with its 18.5:9 ratio and the Infinity Edge.

Sadly, we haven’t heard much about the LG G7 as of yet so a lot of details are yet to be revealed. Samsung has a history of using up all of the available stock of the new Snapdragon SoC which leaves other devices which are launching during a similar time frame to look elsewhere. This is why the LG G6 launched with the Snapdragon 821 while the Galaxy S8 was already up and running with the Snapdragon 835 (in select markets). So unless Qualcomm has planned for this or LG has made a deal with Qualcomm ahead of time, we could see history repeat itself next year.
