While many believe that communication skills are required only in professional life, it is not true. Good communication skills are also needed in personal life for a healthy relationship with our family and friends.
Good communication skills are the key to success in work, life and relationships. Communication is the act of exchanging information between an individual or a group of people. How well this information is transferred and received is the measure of how good our communication skills are.
Not being able to properly communicating, the information shared can be misinterpreted and can lead to poor relationships between the family members, friends and colleagues or superior-subordinates.
The steps to good communication skills are:
1. Know What You Want to Say and Why
First, understand clearly what you actually want to say and why. Know the purpose of your message and what impression you want to leave on the person with whom you are communicating. Consider any barriers you may encounter such as cultural differences or situational circumstances (gender, age or economic biases). You should clearly know the outcome that you want to achieve through the communication.
2. How Will You Say it?
Keep in mind that not only what you are going to say, but how you say it also matters. Be confident enough to make eye contact as it exhibits your self-confidence and trust. Secondly, pay attention to your body language. An approachable pose makes even a difficult communication flow smoothly. Standing with your arms by your side shows that you are approachable and paying attention to what they are saying. Whereas, when you talk with crossed arms and shoulders hunched, it displays your disinterest in the communication.
3. Listen
Communication is a two -way procedure. Just say what you want to say, stop, and let the other person also speak. Pay attention to what he says and never interrupt while he is speaking. Let him express his views and opinions on what you said very respectfully. Listen very carefully or if not listening, pay attention towards the end of what he’s saying so that you could respond accordingly.
4. Reach Understanding, Agreement or Consensus
After your conversation has ended and you have received the feedback, think again the purpose of your communication. Ask yourself questions like have you solved your problem or have you clarified your say. To understand and be understood is the sign of a good communication. Make sure that your message has been received by the person as intended.
