Apple Pay Is Now Accepted at Costco Warehouses Across the U.S.
Apple Pay has a big new retail partner. The contactless payment system is now available across all Costco warehouses in the U.S., according to a new report.
Costco has reportedly been equipping its brick-and-mortar locations with contactless terminals that support Apple Pay for the last few months. As of August 10, the retailer has flipped those terminals on across its 750 locations in the country, MacRumors first reported.
Prior to the widespread rollout, the retail giant had first started limited trials of Apple Pay at a select few locations, including a warehouse near its headquarters in Issaquah, Washington.
The rollout will not include the company’s gas stations at launch, but Costco is planning on adding Apple Pay support to those later on.
While Costco is a significant addition to the Apple Pay ecosystem, the added support also comes shortly after similar partnerships with CVS and 7-Eleven stores. Apple has also inked a deal with eBay to add Apple Pay support to its online retail system, TechCrunch points out.
Apple Pay is quickly expanding in other markets, too — the proprietary payment platform is available in 30 countries across the globe. Apple, of course, has plans to add additional markets to that list in the future.
All in all, the market for OEM payment systems is expected to reach 450 million consumers. Apple Pay is already positioned to take advantage of that. A recent analyst report by Juniper Research suggests that it could account for 1 in 2 for “OEM” payment platforms by 2020.
In addition to Apple Pay, Costco says that its contactless payment terminals will also support users of Samsung Pay and Google Wallet.
Of course, Costco members will still need some plastic to enter one of the retailer’s warehouses: a Costco membership card. That’s until the retailer and tech giants figure out how to add that card to a digital wallet as well.
