Paranoid Android’s Android Oreo ROM is here for the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, and OnePlus 5T

Many of our readers might remember Paranoid Android. It was once a top contender in the Android ROM scene for many different reasons: Innovative features, a slick user interface, you name it. The ROM lost much of its steam after the Android 4.4 KitKat builds, but they eventually returned with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and later, Android 7.1 Nougat. While they were pretty late to the Android Nougat game compared to competitors like LineageOS, their builds were still really stable and feature-rich. Now AOSPA is back in the game again with Android 8.1 Oreo builds, as we reported previously, and we now have builds for the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, and OnePlus 5T.

We took the builds for a spin, but at this time, there’s not a lot to write home about. The builds are based on the May security patch and the builds are lacking many features. You may also find yourself with an occasional bug. It is an initial build, however, so we’re not expecting it to have a huge amount of customization yet. It’s surprisingly stable, at least during my own testing.

While this is totally usable as a daily driver, I would wait before hopping on board, at least for the moment. You do have a handful of features, like pocket mode, but a lot is lacking here. Additionally, Android Pie-based custom ROMs are already available for each of these devices. Fortunately, the Paranoid Android team announced that they’re already working on bringing up the Android 9 Pie release with a handful of features and improvements.

On a Google+ post, the AOSPA team detailed their new versioning system: Their new versioning system follows the convention of Major Android release > major AOSPA revision > minor AOSPA revision. This build is marked as Paranoid Android OA1, following that versioning system, instead of 8.0.0 or 8.1.0. They also showcased a concept for a new navigation system which may arrive with the Android 9 Pie release. You can check it out in the video below.

If the early Android Pie ports aren’t your cup of tea, or if you want to give this early build a shot, then go ahead and install it on your device now! Paranoid Android remains one of our favorite custom ROMs, and we’re excited to see where the project ends up. We’ll keep you informed about upcoming developments.
