The actor gained popularity for his “good ol’ boy” and action hero roles, including in popular films like “Boogie Nights” and “Smokey and the Bandit.”
Born in Lansing, Michigan, Reynolds moved to South Florida when he was young and gained quite a reputation as a promising athlete in his youth. Injuries prevented him from continuing his promising football career, so Reynolds turned to acting.
He played smaller roles throughout the 1950s and 1960s. But it was likely 1972 film “Deliverance,” which cast the actor as a rugged outdoorsman, that truly jumpstarted his career.
Reynolds was Hollywood’s top-grossing actor every year from 1978 to 1982. According to the Hollywood Reporter, that marks the longest stretch of popularity since Bing Crosby in the 1940s. He received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his role in 1997’s Boogie Nights.
While Reynolds is best known for the films he starred in, his career is studded with high-profile roles that he had turned down. He was a top choice to play Michael Corleone in “The Godfather.” He turned down the chance to play James Bond, as well as Hans Solo in “Star Wars.”
Reynolds also spent some time behind the camera directing several films. He also gained a philanthropic reputation for starting the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre, CNN reported.
In 2016, the movie star published a memoir titled “But Enough About Me,” which details his nearly 50 years on the silver screen.
