According to the legend by villagers, the former king of Durgapur, Durgaprasad loved Holi. One year, he lost his son on the day of the festival and subsequently, whenever villagers organized a celebration, it was followed by a famine or an epidemic that led to the deaths of several people.

According to former mukhiya Amresh Kumar Mahto, “Before his death, the king issued orders that his subjects should never celebrate Holi. Incidentally, the king also died on Holi while fighting a battle. For more than 100 years, we have not celebrated Holi. The villagers still accept the order and fear their king’s ghost.”

According to villagers, whenever someone dared to play Holi in the village, there were suspicious and sudden tragedies or deaths in the village. Even the villagers of the nearby village don’t dare to throw colors on any villager of Durgapur.

However, with passing time, the youngsters are allowed to play Holi but outside the village at relatives’ or friends’ places.
